The Honden of Storms

The Honden of storms sits high above Quen'shai. The path is treacherous and the Honden itself is quite cold and inhospitable, sitting among the low lying clouds, but the view is breathtaking. Within lies the great storm spirit and its servants.   It is unclear what purpose any of the Hondens are supposed to serve. They date back to the time of antiquity, and have always been a focus for elemental foreces. Some say that they provide a link between the elemental spirits and man, that each might better understand the other. It is also unclear whether the spirit causes the presence of the elements, or whether it is drawn to them, possibly even feeding on them in some fashion. Likewise many debate whether it is the same spirit that has always dwelled here, or whether spirits depart and others take their place. If the purpose is indeed to promote understanding, it is not working well.   The great storm spirit is served by the storm priests, who wield considerable power given their assosciation with the spirit. The people of Quan'shai regard them with some degree of awe, but also harbour something of a grudge towards them, as their city is frequently drenched with rain. However, the endless downpour flows into lake Tanut and then on to the yellow river, which is a vital source of trade, so it is not without its benefits. A more tense dispute simmers away between the storm priests and the priests of He-Bo, god of the yellow river, as to who really gets the credit for the river's existence and the trade it brings.   Those bedevilled by storms may make a pilgrimage here to beg the spirit for mercy. It is also common for monks to make pigrimages here, particularly those who follow the way of water or the way of fire.

Purpose / Function

The honden houses the great storm spirit, and acts a place of pilgrimage and home to those that have chosen to serve the great spirit.
