Kintai

Kintai is a large continent spanning region that comprises of several culturaly similar kingdoms, sharing a common language and heritage. These were born from the remnants of the Kintai Empire, a long vanished imperial power ruled over by a dynasty known as the Dragon-Emperors. Although Kintai has long been fractured, with frequent wars, alliances and border shifts, the kingdoms that comprise the region are sufficiently alike to one another, and different to outsiders, to be considered a whole entity, and their own sense of shared belief means that the individual kingdoms feel the same way. In short, while Kintai is several distinct political entities, there is more that unites them than divides them.   The people of Kintai considered themselves to be deeply cultured, and steeped in honour and tradition. Few citizens of Kintai have ever travelled beyond the region due to its vast size, and outsiders are generally regarded to be barbarians. The idea of anything beyond Kintai's borders that would be in any way comparable in terms of technology or sophistication, is unthinkable.   Culture in Kintai tends to be feudal with a large peasant class and small number of ruling lords, backed up by elite samurai and large armies. Intellectual matters are the concern of monks, and serveral competing philosophies can be found vying for dominanace.   In Kintai there are a great many gods, all of whom meddle in mortal affairs to a greater or lesser extent. The land is also home to great elemental avatars which are worshipped at Honden shrines throughout the land. The people of Kintai believe in many hells that one may be sent to on death if one lacks virtue. These hells are populated by druel demons wknown as Yoa-gai, who are often served by in the moretal realm by magic wielding ogres known as Oni. Most feared of all is the so called House of Troubles, whose four avatars of sorrow seek to bring an end to all harmony in the world, and bring about universal damnation.

Geography

Geographically the terrain is heavily varied due to its size, but it encompasses large forests and high frozen mountains, fiercely hot deserts to the south, and incredibly long meandering rivers. Kintain is not rich in minerals such as iron, but does have large amounts of valuable silver and jade.
