The Blood of Atlantis Material in Tales from the Rookery | World Anvil

The Blood of Atlantis

The blood of atlantis is a crystal that appears to the average person, as a more magically conductive form of Amethyst. And to an extent they are correct. Amethyst is a form of quartz crystal that has turned purple due to iron that is found in it. Blood is a diluted form of iron. But it is BECAUSE of the fact that the reason for the name the Atlantean crystal carries is because of Blood and not just mineral iron, that makes it so magically conductive. On top of that is also mysteriously magnetic. Enough so that it will not drift away from the Magically and Magenetically mysterious Atlantean Islands. Most of the time These Crystals wash up on Avalon, the smaller of the two islands that make up the Atlantean Archepelago.
These are highly sought after and treasured crystals, as they possess the unique ablility to enhance one's magical prowess. On top of that they preform better than many other materials in HOLDING magic. Other gems, crystals, and ores share the ability to store magic; but none so well as the Blood of Atlantis. That is why these quartz crystals have quickly overtaken the market as the world's most expensive gemstone. Even more mysterious however, is the fact that it has yet to be understood WHY it has such great power. Therefore it cannot be repecated by magic OR science, all attamts have been catastropic failures.
Many think that the color itself is why the Blood of atlantis is so magically conductive, as it is usually a BEAUTIFUL purple hue, and purple is known to be a very spiritual and magical color. That is not the case. Mythologically, blood has always been a powerful source of magical ability. Used in rituals, given to the gods to increase their power, and even being the reason thought a person can do magic in the first place, blood is a conductor of magic. And oftentimes blood is something that gets overlooked. Blood of magical creatures is often prized, because of this and the fact that people consider animals Lesser. It is this fact that causes the true cause of the Blood of Atlantis's magical properties to be overlooked.

Properties

Material Characteristics

To one just stumbling upon the Blood of Atlantis it looks almost like it is a rough chunk of amethyst. Crystaline in structure, and in a vareity of purples it seems to grow in clusters out of the stones of the beach.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Upon picking it up it seems to glow with an otherworldly light.

Geology & Geography

It is only found on Atlantis and it's trailing island Avalon. No where else does it even try to grow, nor does it ever seem to wash up on the coastlines around the world.

Origin & Source

This is the crystalized Blood of the Great Atlantean Sibah, where the Gigantic Animal has rubbed itself raw and had beads of it's blood well up.

Life & Expiration

The crystals are THE GREATEST source of magical conductivity. It has unique magical properties that at once give it use as an engery source for fueling certain spells while also providing the longest lasting magical storage vessel. It has the longest time for containing a spell before it leaks out. It can hold onto a spell for a year and a day. However it also reflects the ambient magic of the world making it seem like it gives off a small amount of magic in its raw form. Almost any kind of magic wielder can hold the blood of atlantis and supplement their spells with the energy from the crystal, because of it's refractive properties.

History & Usage

History

This mineral has been around for as long as Atlantis has. It seems to be an intrensic part of their culture, and was given as gifts to those the Atlantean people deemed worthy. Since much of the history of atlantis has been lost, no one can tall for sure how old the Blood of Atlantis is.

Discovery

It was Re-discovered in 2050 when the first expeditions to Atlantis were able to be made. No one knows it's original discovery date, and it's full properties are still yet to be determined because Magical energy is STILL GROWING.

Everyday use

It is commonly used for training wands, and Magical training facilities. However it can be used for a GREAT number of things.

Cultural Significance and Usage

The Blood of Atlantis is a vital part of atlantean heritage. In a shocking display of prophetic ability the Disney movie, Atlantis the Lost Empire, shows a bit of their culture in the form of their neclaces. As part of a coming of age trial, young Atlanteans are gifted ornate Blood of Atlantis jewelry to wear at all times. This not only boost their magic, but marks them as Adults.
The only other use by Atlanteans of the Blood, is for profit. They craft good luck charms, sell large chunks of it to outside manufactuerers, and even build with it.

Manufacturing & Products

It is often manufactured into descrete jewelry, wands, powders [and from there cremes, lotions, and so on], as well as magical batteries.

Byproducts & Sideproducts

When grinding or shaping the Blood of Atlantis, a clear liquidy gel is often formed. This Liquid, called Null Gel usually, has differing properties to the Blood of Atlantis. This product can dampen magical effects, like curses, and it tends to draw out magic and pull it into itself... usually Re-Crystalizing in the process. This re0crystalization is NOT the Blood of Atlantis, but a much weaker, but still stronger then anything else on the market, magic battery.

Reusability & Recycling

Blood of Atlantis items are highly sought after. If one was foolish enough to sell or get rid of their old Blood of Atlantis items it would always be snatched up by those who believe it would propell their magic higher.

Distribution

Trade & Market

A highly sought after item, the crystals that do get sold in either their raw or worked forms are in HIGH end Jewelry stores. I mean the kind of high end that has security so tight no one could squeak through. These crystals are then either worked by Incredibly precise artisans or sold with the traditional Atlantean style preserved.
It has never been traded, only gifted To those deemed worthy by Atlanteans.

Law & Regulation

The only laws that have been put in place as of now, are Anti-Fraud laws and No-Removal laws.
Because of their incredible similarities to Amethyst, many forgers were attemting to pass of Amethyst jewels/jewelry as Blood of Atlantis Gems. To mitigate that, One must have a licence to sell, and a certificate of batch authenticity sighed by the Atlantean quality control specialists.
The Laws of non removal, are simple. One cannot remove a Peice of Blood of Atlantis from the islands without either a Receipt or an Export form. This prevets tourists from simply taking the crystals from the island for free, and selling them for INCREDIBLE profit. An entire law branch of Atlantis is firmly devoted to prevening this crime, and they have seen EVERY trick in the book.
