Phoenix Flight Tradition / Ritual in Tales from the Rookery | World Anvil

Phoenix Flight

As has previously been noted Phoenixes are mystical beings who have been around since the last wave of magic [see Phoenixes  and Phoenix Aerie]. With a history and tradition stretching back farther than written history, it is not surprising that the Phoenixes would have a ritual for the celebration of rebirth. What may seem unusual is that there is also a celebration for when a Phoenix leaves the Aerie. It is worth noting that when to leave is a decision that each individual makes for themselves. It is not determined by physical age, or the judgement of the community. Some individuals opt to remain in the Aerie for their whole lifecycle. Others ask to be adopted by other Phoenixes in order to get out into the world at large more quickly.   Whenever they opt to leave; however, there is a traditional way of taking leave. The Phoenix who is choosing to leave prepares a rebirth chest for themselves for when they return. It often includes practical things like children's clothing, toys, favorite games, or adult clothing for when it's there time to sit in the nest again. Some also contain sentimental gifts such as notes and reminders or mementos from previous lives. Things that they do not want lost in their upcoming travels. Things that will always tie them to the aerie.   Once the chest is completed, they walk to the caverns above the town. Each Phoenix, for there are a finite number, has their own location to store the chest they have packed. Either alone, or with friends both new and old, they make their way to their location and spend time there offering up hopes and dreams for their future selves, or forgiving their past selves in order to start the new life free from past actions. Each life is unique and deserves to be lived as such.
