New Houston Geographic Location in Tales from the Rookery | World Anvil

New Houston

New Houston is a city in Texas. After the tragic effects of climate change caused Houston, as well as other coastal cities to be flooded out and made unlivable, New Houston was built between Abiline and Midland. Very much a planned community, the city is well laid out with all of the amenities. It's construction drew in many new industries like the Magic Circle, and The Rookery, Inc, as well as research facilities like The Burning Tower.

Geography

Located on the Great Plains, New Houston is flat. It does not have access to a ready form of water, like a river, but it is at the conjunction of three major ley lines and a source of tremendous elemental power. The crafting of the town maintained it's prairie nature in order to preserve magic as much as possible. Non-native plants are not allowed and the laws are strict. Buildings are designed to use the natural winds and heat rather than to block them. As a result the town is quite friendly to fliers of all species.

History

In 2045, Atlantis rose from the already rising oceans. At about the same time climate change had melted enough of the polar ice caps to start flooding the coastal areas. Island locations, like the Bahamas, and Hawaii, began to shink, but then so did coastal cities like Houston and New Orleans. At first attempts were made to save the cities but soon it became apparent that there was nothing that could be done in the long term. Drastic measure were taken and new cities were created. Magic helped tremendously. Within only a short span of time, a mere decade, New Houston was livable and was nearing the population density of Houston. By 2075, large portions of Houston were completely submerged. Ecological efforts are ongoing to remove the garbage, leaving the shell of the city for the sea and it's new denizens to claim.

Tourism

As a newly planned and constructed city that is home to a largely magical population, New Houston is considered a popular tourist destination. There aren't many cities where you can take the skyway tour of the city.
