King Hune, Emperor of Arleaon, who was believed lost at sea, is found in his own dungeon held captive by his counselor and soon-to-be crowned son. The short war that follows claims many monarchs' lives, forever changing the balance of power in Arleaon.

Members of the Edrian military discover that King Hune, who was thought to have perished two years prior when his flagship sank, is in fact being held prisoner in the castle by his counselor, the regent Thaeonnesis. When the king's son Prince Aaron is informed of the discovery mere months before his coronation, he immediately tries to silence those few who know the secret, imprisoning several in the same dungeon as the king. Some suspect Aaron is merely a puppet, but most believe the boy plays a part in his father's capture. Those faithful to Hune attempt to free their king but are countered by Aaron and “The Betrayer” Thaeonnesis. Thus begins the War for Edrian.   King Aaron leads an army of mercenaries and monsters provided to him by Thaeonnesis. King Hune’s Faithful, including most of the armies of Edrian and Cade, come to the defense of the trapped, dying king.   The war between King Hune’s Faithful and his son Aaron concludes in a battle at the gates of the Edrian castle, and at great cost. King Aaron is killed in the fighting, but Thaeonnesis “The Betrayer”, corruptor and mastermind of the entire conspiracy, escapes. As his desperate last act, Aaron uses an ancient artifact known as "The Amulet of Endings" to turn the entire battlefield to stone. The effect is absorbed by The Chancellor, a guardian of the land of Arleaon who is fighting with King Hune's Faithful. He, along with the silver dragon Vawhn and a red dragon of The Betrayer's summoning, are the only three affected, turning into statues on the front lawn of the castle. The two dragons are frozen mid grapple. Soon after the battle, the old king dies.
