Gwrü

The Gwrü are the dominant culture in the tundra-like environment of Aolling. They are a hearty and resilient people, well-suited to the harsh conditions of their frozen homeland, and despite the challenges of life here have created a thriving and vibrant culture for themselves. They are skilled hunters and fishers, who have learned to survive on the sparse resources of their frozen homeland. They are also known for their elaborate and beautiful clothing, made from the hides and pelts of the animals they hunt.   Gwrü speak the complex and nuanced Colmerhæd language, although with a distinct local dialect found tougher to understand the closer one gets to civilized centres, such as Cerlin, where it is received as a sign of backwardness. Comfortable city-dwelling counterparts err egregiously in failing to remark upon the usefulness of their heartier cousins, as they both procure natural resources and serve as as a secondary line of defense vis-a-vis the The Gorog (the first line being the similarly "backwards" folk of Gilmere, the Mieroy). But, it must be admitted, the Gwrü can smell rather ripe when ambling into town, so perhaps one can forgive some part of that impression!   Similarities between the Mieroy and the Gwrü mentioned above certainly binds them in one way, although, compared to the Mieroy, the Gwrü are downright genteel, and act accordingly when their friends from Myrod come to town, which they do regularly, especially to the capital, Scotheely. As is ubiquitously the case across the island, beer is a popular favourite in taverns here, though there is a particular Gwrü brew called Scotheely Winterhaað, after the town, whose dark and frothy draught represents one of the few exports to travel far outside Aolling.   They are also a deeply spiritual people, their religious beliefs revolving around a pantheon of powerful gods and goddesses represented in the The Old Tradition, a common faith around Rajan. These deities are said to be responsible for the many natural phenomena that occur in Aolling, such as the changing of the seasons and the coming of the snow, and certain spirits unique to the area are freely included as objects of the Gwrü's worship.
