Faewood

A unique form of wood native to the the Elderwood, the home of the Cernai and Wood Elves. Due to it being harvested from the trees of the Elderwood, which have been heavily altered by Fae magic over the centuries, Faewood is naturally charged with magic, and is a great conductor of it, making it a key component in the construction of magic staves and other enchanted wood structures and items.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Faewood is quite similar in appearance to normal wood, except for a few slightly glowing lines of Aether on the inside, usually blueish purple, but the colour does vary depending on the particular Fae magic used.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Prolonged contact with raw Faewood can cause a tingling sensation to the touch. Interestingly, Faewood is also quite resilient to non-magical damage, including fire, cutting, and blunt force.

Geology & Geography

Faewood is found exclusively in the Elderwood.

Origin & Source

Faewood is harvested from trees that grow in the Elderwood.

Life & Expiration

Faewood is stable, and can hold its latent stores of Aether for a long time, though prolonged, intense usage of this material as a magic focus can drain its charge more quickly. Additionally, destruction of Faewood in certain forms, like snapping a staff or wand, would result in a sudden, intense discharge of Aether.

History & Usage

History

Faewood was first discovered shortly after contact was established between the Cernai and the rest of the world. When it's magical properties became known, it became a highly sought after but difficult to obtain material in the construction of magic focuses, a status it still holds today.

Discovery

Faewood was first discovered by woodcutters and Mages from Ulfgard.

Everyday use

Faewood is commonly used as a construction material for especially powerful magic focuses.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Among the Cernai, their druidic culture reveres Faewood as a kind of holy plant. Faewood is also valuable to the Wood Elves, who value it for its innate magical properties, and use it in their most significant structures and works.

Refinement

Since Faewood is nearly impervious to normal forms of damage, it must be magically "shaped" into the desired form, a process that can take some time.

Manufacturing & Products

Aetherwood is a primary component in the creation of powerful magic focuses.

Hazards

Great care must be taken when when shaping a piece of Faewood, for sufficient damage can cause a sudden, violent release of all the Aether contained within. The older the tree the wood came from, the bigger the outburst.

Reusability & Recycling

When it's Aether is spent, Faewood can be used like normal wood.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Faewood is sold as a premium building material for magic items, and can only be sold by mages who can harvest it.

Storage

Faewood is stored in secure storage areas, and kept under lock and key, to prevent it from being stolen.

Law & Regulation

The Cernai are only willing to allow some Faewood on the outermost reaches of the Elderwood to be harvested by outsiders, given it's cultural significance to them. Additionally, due to the high level of expertise needed to handle and craft it, only highly skilled Mages can use and sell it.
