Redrise

The primary method for demons of the Abyss to fight the devils of the Nine Hells was to travel between planes through utilizing the unique metaphysical relationship of the two planes. While the Hells are seemingly visually arranged as a pyramid of subplanes, the Abyss has no such structure. "Below" the Hells is a vast, monstrous, destructive landscape inhabited by all the different types of demonic creatures, and such is the case on the sides as well. As the Abyss encompasses the ground below, the same is true for the "walls" surrounding the Hells.   The demonic leaders led their armies of pseudo-immortal monsters in the climb upwards to reach Avernus, the uppermost of the Hells and therefore the one that receives the least of the protective planar power of the throne of the Ruler. Once they've reached the top, they break through the widest and thinnest of the Hells and their failure or success in their invasions are everchanging.

Redfall

The Blood War see the deaths of numerous demons, and the nature of fiends metaphysically tie them intrinsically to their home plane of the Abyss to the point where they are immortal on other planes. Not by being unkillable while in foreign lands, but by their deaths sending them home across the dimensional borders of the planes, and when they die, they fall.   In the skies above the subplanes of the Nine Hells, these demons who have been slain in the subplane above are seen as a very unique form of infernal meteorological phenomenon. Residents see them as falling red streaks that descend below the horizon as they plummet down towards the Abyss below the Hells.   After the Fiendish Overturn, the Redrise has been rendered effectively useless, as Avernus now inabhits the "bottom". It is now closest to the "ground" and this has given great oppertunity to the demons, all because the new Ruler at the time was homesick. The demons no longer has to spend time and effort to climb, causing invasions that have been consistently occasional for millennia to become a ceaseless constant.
