Giz Foolthorn Character in Tacillia | World Anvil

Giz Foolthorn

Giz Foolthorn was born in Zrarar, the capital of the Dominion of the Hobgoblin. Even compared to other kobolds, he was small in size. During his childhood, he never really had a friend. He always lost during play with other kids except when his small size was an advantage. In those plays, he always won. This put a wedge between him and the other kids. He became a loner, especially since his parents, elder brother, and sisters weren't around either.
When he reached the age when his parents sent him to find work, his small size was a detriment again. Mostly he was turned away, except by the sanitation workers. They would have been delighted if Giz joined them because he would have been able to reach places they couldn't. But in this case, it was Giz who turned them down. Because every street urchin learns some sleight of hand, he tried himself out in pickpocketing and thievery.
To his surprise, he found out he was good at it, and he soon added burglary to his portfolio. He was always cautious about selecting an easy target, and he always robbed houses near the wall of Brillansis. If, by chance, the town guards cornered him, he could always climb the wall and hide from the provost easier than from the town guards. Of course, the provosts caught him a couple of times too, but they were always easier on him than the town guards would have.
The last time when the provost caught him, one of them gave him a piece of paper with a time and place written on it. Giz went to the site, and there he met with someone wholly covered in a dark robe. Based on his stature and accent, Giz was sure the person before him was a male orc, but he never saw him again. The person offered him a less dangerous job than his usual work, and he offered him a bigger reward. Giz accepted that job, and soon after that, he received a constant flow of other jobs, always from different people. Once, he could swear that his contact was a calamor. But his first contact was correct. The information he was provided made his jobs more straightforward, and the reward he received was always more significant than what he could make on his own. Plus, the town guards didn't care about stolen maps, papers, and books.
After his tenth job, he was surprised that his next contact was without a robe. Giz immediately felt he could advance with his unknown partners if he wished. His contact was a goblin woman, and she told Giz that they were delighted with his work so far, and if he wanted, they could give him other, more important jobs. She also told him that she is a member of the Veiled Faculty and, based on what they know about Giz, he would be a valuable member of the organization. Giz heard the rumors about the Veiled Faculty. He understood what they were fighting for, but it didn't really move him. However, other jobs and even bigger rewards intrigued him. So he decided to follow the woman and join the Veiled Faculty. In any case, if they aren't for his liking, he can always leave after a few lucrative missions.
