The Extra Ordinary

The Extra Ordinary is a comfortable establishment, sitting in a prime area along the coastline of Vulzesh. With a wide amount of ales, and a talented group of employees, the establishment has grown successful by tailoring it's experience to a specific clientele with a discerening taste.

Purpose / Function

The Extra Ordinary, as most ordinaries do, serves as a combination of a tavern and brewery, a small hotel, and location for meetings of groups or the people at large. The interior of the structure is currently constructed to accommodate nine guests in fairly large spaces. The space is normally open to any with the coin to partake in the drinks available, but can be reserved in advance. News is also disseminated here, either by one of the city criers, or with printed publication of events posted on the exterior brick walls of the building.

Alterations

Although the brick exterior of the Extra Ordinary has remained consistent since it’s construction, the interior has been changed over several times, often as the property has changed hands. The wooden walls of the second floor have been added, removed, and redirected to change the accommodation of the number and quality of guests. Harlihn, it’s current owner, decided to shrink the number of guests from an even dozen down to eight, to provide a greater quality of experience to the patrons, rather than trying to rely on mass numbers.

Architecture

The Extra Ordinary is an impressive building, given it’s purpose. While maintaining the general rectangular shape of such buildings, the bottom floor’s entrance is open, supported by mighty stone columns and decorative archways. With the entrance pointed towards the coastline of Verzuhz, it allows guests to watch the sea, and the ships enter or leave the city, as well as providing a great opportunity to watch the sun rise over the ocean.

Defenses

To help protect against the risk of flooding in the case of heavy storms from the coastline, as well as to provide a clear sign of property boundary line, a stone half wall was constructed in a half circle, with doors on either the left or right side to enter. This has worked reasonable well in the past; it would take a truly genius work of engineering to protect the building completely from the fully monstrous hurricanes, which thankfully have been quite rare for the region.

History

The building took it’s name and humorous play on words comes from expanding business. Having already owned one property in the city, the halfling entrepreneur Nihlgren bought the property after the death of it’s original owner. Named Love’s Tavern after the surname of its owner, Nihlgren thought the name gave the wrong intention, and didn’t want to risk associating it with ‘houses of ill repute’. Now owning two properties, Nihlgren chose to humorously name his newest business “The Extra Ordinary”.   The property has retained the name long since Nihlgren’s death and the subsequent change of hands over generations. The public has generally forgotten the origins of the name, to little concern. Although the humor of the name may have worn off, it is still easily memorable, which has served the owners and the establishment in good stead. The property has changed hands considerably, before being bought about twenty years ago by Harlihn, a dwarf hailing from the southwest who tried to start a new life for himself as an entrepreneur, and who had a knack for fine tastes in alcohol and larger hospitality. He's been the longest owner of the Ordinary this century, though few other than the elves of the town would know any better.

Tourism

The hotel function of the ordinary is a major draw for the tourists and visitors to the city of Verzuhz. Harlihn has tried to tailor the hotel accommodations to officers, veteran seamen, and traveling merchants entering into the city. Providing not just additional space, but ensuring a comfortable stay with the creature comforts they had often been missing while in transit.   For those in the know, this meant a particular form of “tourism”; the type that Nihlgren tried to avoid when changing the name from Love’s Tavern. Harlihn’s primary employee, Tiffany has been known to provide favors of an intimate variety to the Extra Ordinary’s guests.
