Carris Whismael

Carris Whismael is a half-elf who serves on the Iris Council, where he represents the interests of the newly-formed middle class of the Kingdom of Vern. A close friend of  Cornelius Aberator, Carris was Cornelius's first supporter during the Iris Rebellion. Currently, he is personally funding an investigation into the Mad Gold Dragon Incident which has uncovered a hitherto unknown conspiracy to destroy the kingdom. However, much remains unknown about this threat.

The Iris Rebellion

Carris confided in our heroes that before the Iris Rebellion, he was involved in organized crime. Specifically, he was a member of the then-largest crime family in Vern--the Tackless. He parlayed his influence with the Tackless to secure weapons for the rebels. However, this move drove a wedge between the members of the family; while some supported the revolution, others cared little for politics and simply wanted to get rich quick. This rift led to the disbanding of the largest criminal organization in Vern, leaving a power vacuum upon which many criminal organizations, including the League of Shadows, have capitalized.

Councilman

As a councilman, Carris tries to represent the interests of the newly formed middle class of the kingdom. Before the revolution, most of the capital was held by the aristocracy and social mobility was curtailed. Now free from these strictures (and with a substantial amount of wealth redistributed to the people), citizens are purchasing mines, land, and businesses freely. Hence the composition of the middle class is diverse, featuring people of all races. However disparate their interests, they are still vulnerable to the powers of the largest monopolies and the remaining nobility. Carris has done his best to introduce and support laws that limit the influence of the ultra wealthy, in order to allow the middle class to reach maturity.
