Tackless

Prior to the Iris Rebellion, the Tackless were the most powerful criminal organization in the City of Vern.
The story of their founding was passed down the generations of the criminal family. Around 200 years ago, an old tavern called the Bag o' Tacks stood in the slums of Vern. The bartender made a deal with the Barrel Beaters, another gang in Vern, to source liquor at a steep discount, but soon reneged on payment. As revenge, the Barrel Beaters torched the place. The bartender rallied the regulars of his establishment and waltzed straight into the Barrel Beaters headquarters, where he proceeded to beat their doyen to death with one of the floorboards pulled from the ruins of the Bag o' Tacks. He declared himself the new doyen and renamed the gang to become the Tackless, as a memento of his bar.
Under new leadership, the former Barrel Beaters subsumed many of the other criminal organizations in the ancient Dwarven city.
During the Iris Rebellion, Cornelius Aberator secured parley with the Tackless and convinced them to assist in overthrowing the king. While it remains unclear how Cornelius influenced the criminal organization, the outcome is manifest. The rebellion succeeded, establishing the New Aberator Dynasty and a series of sweeping reforms throughout the civil service. However, the Tackless quickly subsumed to infighting and splintered into factions--including the League of Shadows.
