Snowbird Island

Located on the eastern edge of the Wyrmsea, Snowbird Island is a large island that is notable for being the home of an enormous ice roc. The huge white bird is the source of the supernaturally cold weather that keeps much of the surrounding Wyrm Straits bitterly cold for much of the year, and it hunts throughout the island chain.

Much of the large island is perpetually covered in snow and ice, and survivors of attempts to hunt the roc speak of the breath-stealing cold that emanates from its body. Ice floes float in the waters surrounding the island as a result of the cold weather, and pose a hazard to shipping when they drift away into the Strait. They soon melt, however, once they leave the roc's environs and enter the warmer waters.

The warm and humid air from the surrounding area is forced up and over the bubble of cold surrounding Snowbird Island, where the moisture condenses as it cools. The falling rain is swiftly turned to snow, and there are frequent snowstorms and blizzards around the island as a result.

Sages believe that the roc either came from the elemental plane of ice, or was bred by frost giants, as it is much larger and more powerful than others of its kind. It has been seen carrying small whales aloft, and it will periodically attack ships which venture too close, carrying away one or two sailors. Magic-users who were fortunate enough to obtain one of its shed feathers have discovered that the feathers retain their magic and affinity to cold. If they are used in cold-related spells, the work is enormously strengthened.
