Moon Cakes

During the annual Golden Moon Festival in Bajapur the entire population, from lowest beggar to highest noble, eats their fill of moon cakes. These are small round sweet pastries which are coloured yellow-gold. The source of the colour varies with the wealth of the one creating it: from an egg glaze and careful baking for the moon cakes eaten by poor people, through saffron and even gilding with pure gold.   Fillings for the moon cakes vary somewhat, but are usually a sweet and sticky paste which is commonly made from rice flour mixed with honey and sometimes finely-ground nuts. Depending on the type of moon cake, it may then be formed into a cake and steamed, or covered with pastry and baked.
