Gorja Character in Sundered Lands | World Anvil

Gorja

Gorja is the goddess of thieves and evil merchants, preaching selfishness, self-reliance, and enriching oneself at any cost. She values those of her followers who manage to overcome opposition to take that which would otherwise be denied them, but those who fail to properly tithe to the temple from their ill-gotten gains are severely punished. Her faithful are required to "tithe a finger" - one-fifth of every five-fingered discount must be tithed. Should the priests discover that a tithe has been withheld, they will declare open season upon the faithless individual, who will swiftly find everything they own has been stolen.   Alignment. Gorja is Neutral Evil, with her doctrine that only the self and individual matters.

Divine Domains

Gorja's clerics are granted powers from the domains of Trickery and Avarice.   Portfolios. The goddess of thieves and merchants holds the portfolios of Greed, Selfishness, and Theft. Her positive aspect is Self Reliance - being able to meet one's own needs by relying on one's own powers and resources rather than those of others.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Depiction. Gorja is usually depicted as little more than the shadowed outline of a well-figured woman wearing a hood, as she is usually shown in a female aspect. She may be bearing an unsheathed dagger, or a pouch of coins. One of her hands is always outstretched in a grasping gesture.   The symbol of Gorja is an amorphous vortex of grasping tendrils swirling toward a central point of utter absorption.

Tenets of Faith

COMMANDMENTS OF GORJA
  • Take it all and give nothing back.
  • Only those with strength of will and guile prosper. All others are nothing more than sheep awaiting shearing.
  • Never fail to tithe to the temple, or what you have gained shall be taken in turn.

Holidays

The holy day of the goddess of thieves is the longest moonless night of the year, closest to the winter equinox. Wealthy individuals and merchants must take special care with their valuables, and often hire additional guards, as the night features revelries of theft, with thieves considering their endeavours blessed by their patron during the hours of darkness.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

The goals of Gorja and her priesthood are simply to enrich themselves at all costs, with no regard for the needs or suffering of others.
