Tryst Settlement in Stelair | World Anvil

Tryst

Demographics

Mostly Human with a good mixture of Elf and Dwarf peoples. Most of the city is well off but about 30% of the population are struggling or in poverty.

Government

The city is run by the Royal Primary of House Holden. Final say on all laws, criminal hearings, trade deals, ect must be approved by them. Of course there are other governing bodies such as the city militia, trade board, and city planners. However all still report to the Royal Primary for final approval on any project. The actual involvement of the ruler is up to said ruler. It can be very intense even if the ruler is casually involved, thus the appointed position of the Royal Second exists. A delegation and advisement position most of the time unless the Royal Primary is unavailable or not well enough to voice their judgment.

Defences

Northern walls protect the majority of the city and are thick enough to hold against most siege weaponry. Accompanying barracks near the walls allows soldiers to man the walls and defend against attackers. The protection of the cities lakeside is fully reliant of the modest naval force the city still maintains. Though there are major canals that run into the cities center, each one has two steel reinforced gate house which can lock down the canals.   The city also has large public and fully stocked bunkers under each of their large parks. Each designed to house and protect much of the cities populous. Originally built during the Ice Crisis incase @House Mivani decided to attack, the expansive bunkers have fallen into disuse. While fully function still, and patrol semi-regularly, creepy crawlies and other undesirables have managed to worm their way inside over the decades.

Industry & Trade

The city is full of craftspeople from potters to silversmiths. The city even can boast of having two seperate dwarven smiths from Clan Epee-D'acier, a people famed for their metalworking & forging abilities. It has remained a thriving center for skilled labor for generations upon generations, thanks in no small part to @House Tyman's grants to craftspeople who take on apprentices. Another boon to Tryst's economy is is home to the Giovanni Shipwright's Guild, a family run group who have remained the most respected and trusted shipbuilders in the @River Kingdoms for over 1000 years.

Infrastructure

Three large canals run up into the cities heart from Lake Coureh. Allowing vessels to manage their goods either in the cities central harbor or smaller harbours set midway up the canals.   Within the walls of the city are several fully functioning farms which help supply a portion of the populous. Each one has a functional windmill, which was funded by House Tyman, allowing them for the farms to be fully functioning and able to deliver their processed grains and water the fields.   Each section of the city has its own tower in their plaza that can function as an emergency bunker as well as a signal tower to other parts of the city in case of fire, attack, riots, ect. They are maned at all hours of the day by trained militia members as well as people who help visitors travel the city.

Guilds and Factions

Guilds

The Defined Works Guild

This group of individuals work to register the designs, plans, and creative works with the city so to better help legal cases involving the stealing of a craftspersons work. Their services are sponsored by the Temple of Molla but they do accept outside donations to supplement their staff of mostly volunteers.

Dock Work Guild

A guild that works to keep fair and equal workers rights in all of the harbors and dock space throughout the city. It also runs several dock worker exclusive taverns & entertainment establishments along the docks. Rumor has it that undercity elements have their hooks in this guild, but nothing has been proven as of yet.

Giovanni Shipwright's Guild

A family run guild who trains all who come to their steps but only graduates a handful form their tutelage. Failing or leaving an apprenticeship under the Giovanni family is by no means a sign of a bad shipwright. However getting their approval and become an official member of the guild essentially assures you work anywhere you travel within the River Kingdoms. A good number of those who become members end up joining the families private business for a number of years before moving on to work for themselves.

Construction Lodge

Not a unified guild really, however many new craftspersons are able to find tutelage and mentorship from the members of the lodge. Which, aside from being sanctioned as to allow their own private guild house, was the entire entire point of the group to begin with.

Factions

Temple of (PC) Molla

Practically the city patron god, Molla is heavily worshipped hear. While one would think the feasting city would put Jaydune, the god of freedom and drink, on a pedestal. However the people of Tryst have a pension for an overall order however chaotic. Part of the widespread love also has to do with the story of a passed Royal Primary of House Holden striking a deal with (PC) Molla to shield Tryst from the majority of horrors that came from the Chaos War. The church holds a lot of sway with the people of Tryst, but it rarely uses it. And usually only in the benefit of the city at large.

The Marquis/Marquise

The rightful heir to become the Royal Primary of the Tyman family is Royal Marquis Esidro. He is kind hearted, well loved, and has made it his mission to relieve tense relations with the northern nobles of House Mivani. Many people have sided with his views in wanting peace and not instigate another war. However Esidro's younger sister, Royal Marquise Elisa "Stillheart", has completely the opposite stance. She is of the belief that House Mivani should be wiped out before they decide to attack their homes once again. She is also fanning this fire into other citizens through speeches and rallies as her brother is away negotiating future deals with the northern nobles. Thus the citizenship has split between two major factions. One supporting Esidro and one supporting Elisa. What has allowed this divide to widen further is the fact that the current Royal Primary, Renzo Tyman, is only getting older at age 79 and has still yet refused to relinquish the crown. While Esidro is the rightful death heir, the crown is normally passed from Primary to Primary when the former deems a successor. Without the much loved ruler outright putting his support behind either sibling, fear is starting to creep into the hearts of the citizens.

The Farmerit

Much of the northern reaches of the city are home to laborers who work in the fields or do hard labor. Because of this conditions and people are fairly poor. The Farmerit was formed to try and promote craftspeople to move business further north to help the area grow. Through gold grants, promised patronage, and even discounted labor. Most efforts have fallen on deaf ears but the group has managed to bring some growth to the area.

Criminal Factions

Katino Family

Nobility aren't the only families that have power here in the city. This elven family has been operating here for centuries. Carefully managing the underground smuggling market and suppling many exoctic goods to the good people of Tryst. Since the Chaos War however, their power has slipped as they lost contact with their outlying suppliers. A shell of its former self, the family still holds a grip on the black market within Tryst. But that hold is weakening.

Bianchi Family

Formerly a street gang working under the Katino's, a trio of brothers decided to take a page out of their book and....conglomerate their resources. Really rising to power during the Chaos War, these former thugs found themselves the legal owners of several buildings in respected parts of town. Thanks in no small part to untimely deaths. The family has since expanded their control and become landlords to hundreds of buildings across the city. Using them to house illegal entertainment, sell "indentured servants", and launder precious metals.

Moretti Family

Quiet and used to keep to themselves on the westside of the city. Light extortion, blackmail, and fine drugs was the name of their game. Not wanting to dirty themselves in petty squabbles. However unknown recent changs has caused them to make aggressive moves into the wider black market. Specifically challenging the Katino's and Accardi's, actively taking their business. Their aggressiveness backed with rare magical weaponry.

Accardi Family

As old as the Katino's but still managed to hold onto most of their power in the smuggling trade thanks to their contacts within House Holden, another nobile house outside of the city. Also in the trade of exotic and not exactly legal goods, the family has competed with the Katino's for generations. An ancient ceasefire however keep the Accardi's from wresting control of the black market completely. Though, with the Moretti family growing ansty, and the Katino's reluctance to explore the growing slave trade, it might be time to make a move.

Architecture

Everything is very close together. Buildings are almost always multiple stories and have several different tenents in them. Whether it be a commercial or residential building, it is exceedingly rare for one to occupy a building without other peoples being also occupying it. Large spaces broken down into bite sized purchase or leasable chunks. A mixture of stonework and carpentry make up these large buildings, and their design is usually fairly blocky.
