The street around you is silent. All around you stand your friends and neighbours holding a single candle that flickers in the darkness. You stand together as the light returns to the sky and the new year arrives.

Origins

New Years Dawn is an Earthen tradition that began in the late 2000s. It celebrates that the Earth and its inhabitants are alive to celebrate another year. This celebration began when the Earth reached its lowest point in hopes of survival. Scientists believed that there was nothing more to be done and that the Earth would be consumned in the destruction caused by humankind and could never be saved.   However, some people disagreed with this outlook and believed that there was hope for the future. On the last day of the year they gathered together and lit candles and wished good fortune on the the earth for the year to come. The Earth did not die that year, and so the following year they gathered together again, and more people joined them. They lit their candles and wished the Earth survive yet another year. Yet again the Earth survived, and the tradition survived too, for the almost two thousand years up until today.

Celebration

The Last Light

New Years dawn oficially begins at the last light of the year; when the sun sets for the last time. The night is spent partying, dancing and meeting up with friends in celebration of the year that has just passed. Some people also exchange cards and gifts with messages to their loved ones. This tradition began when the fear of the Earth's death was more real in peoples minds as a way to give family and friends something to remember you by incase everything falls apart. However, no it is just a friendly way to show someone that you care.

Candles of Hope

Candles have always held meaning in human civilization for as long as they have existed. They represent a hope and a warmth that banishes darkness. During the celebration of the New Years Dawn, all lights are switched off and people gather in the street with a single lit candle each.   Together, these candles are bright and remind the people that together there is hope for the future of Earth. They stand together and watch the sun rise until the light is all around them, promising that the Earth is still alive for another day.

Cultural Significance

Community

New Years Dawn brings friends and families together to celebrate the coming year and everything it will bring. It is a time of happiness and joy even if the previous year was not as merry. Because of the big parties people throw, it is also an oppurtunity to meet up with old friends and make new ones which is important in strengthening the close-knit communities that now make uo most of Earth's remaining citizens.

Hope

The celebration also rekindles hope in those who have lost it. Particularly during a time where everyone needs to be taking part in protecting the Earth from further damage. By bringing a community together and reminding them of hope where they may believe there is none makes it much more likely for the Earth to receover from the damage caused to it by humankind in the past.
