Action: Research (crew member with loyalty 5+ and Investigation proficiency, or character with Investigation Proficiency), Craft (character with Calligrapher’s Supplies and Investigation Proficiency)
A Library contains a collection of books plus one or more desks and reading chairs, and two sets of Calligrapher’s Supplies.
Proficiency
When you perform a Research or Craft action on the facility, if you are not proficient with Investigation make a wisdom check against DC 15; if successful you gain proficiency with Investigation.
Craft Options
When you use the Craft Action with this facility, you perform the Publish Work action:
Publish Work. The vessel must have an active
Scriptorium or
Archive. Choose a topic you are considerably familiar with. This may be a topic you have successfully researched a number of times, something related to your class, species, or background, or skill you have proficiency in. The DM must approve the definition of the topic.
Make an investigation proficiency check. If you have successfully Undertaken Research on the topic one or more times, add +1 to your roll for each time you were successful. If the topic is your character's background, add the ability modifier of one ability you raised as a benefit of the background. If the topic is a proficiency you have expertise in, double your proficiency investigation modifier.
Select a name for your published work. You create a number of copies of your work equal to your intelligence modifier. The success of your intelligence check determines the quality of your published work based on the Difficulty Class table. The crafted items are placed in your cargo.
Research Options
When you use the Research Action with this facility, choose one of the following options:
Undertake Research. Choose a topic to research. The topic can be a legend, a known event or location, a person of significance, a type of creature, or a famous object. The DM must approve the definition of the topic. You can choose a topic any number of times, but can only be successful regarding a topic a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier. This number resets any time you gain a level.
To undertake the research, make an Investigation proficiency check. If your vessel has more than one Library facility, add a +2 bonus to your roll for each Library after the first. The DM determines the Difficulty Class of your research.
If you are unsuccessful, nothing happens. If you are successful, you obtain up to three accurate pieces of information about the topic that were previously unknown to you. The DM determines the information you discover. Keep a track of the number of times you have successfully researched a topic, it may become relevant if your character wishes to publish their research.
Send for Peer Review. You must have 10 copies of an original published work of your own, and either be docked at a settlement with a
Port Authority of renown 5+ or have an active
Teleportation Circle on your vessel to send the work for Peer Review. The work is sent via the
Port Authority to experts in the relevant field such as individuals, specific Colleges of Academia (including Bardic colleges), churches of relevant divine powers, or even supernatural beings considered experts in the topic.
In 3d4 x 10 days time the peer review process is complete, and your work becomes Peer Reviewed Work. The category of your Peer Reviewed Work is based on the success of your Published Work.
Copies of Peer Reviewed works can be sold for gold at any
Port Authority, College of Academia (including Bardic colleges), churches of relevant divine powers, or even to individuals. Each copy of the work is sold for an amount according to the Quality of Published Work Table.
