It is the year 2961 in the Enerithan campaign setting, nearly three millennia since the end of the Eye Tyrant wars that blazed across the known spheres of Spelljammer. It is barely one hundred years since the time of troubles in Realmspace when gods walked the face of Faerun, and a few scant years less since the world of Krynn was destroyed by the Scro during the Second Unhuman War (UHW2) between the forces of light and darkness.

UHW2 was only brought to a sudden end by the devastating burning of the phlogiston, the rainbow ocean that all known Crystal Spheres floated in. No spacer worth their salt risked lighting a fire outside a sphere, knowing the explosive nature of the gas, but none could imagine or explain the apocalyptic power that set the entire flow afire and shattered the eternal Crystal Spheres.

Trillions of lives across scores of known worlds were destroyed in mere moments, with entire planets burnt down to their bedrock, and immense shards of broken crystal floating in space. Some say the Astral Sea rushed into the void left by the phlogiston, while others say the remaining stars and worlds were shunted into it by powers beyond even the strongest of known gods. Entire star systems have been lost, the balance of power ever shifted, and chaos has reigned supreme.

Nature abhors a vacuum, and the space lanes were ever home to a near infinite number of alliances, organisations, and empires. The Imperial Elven Navy undertook a radical mobilisation to secure worlds and assets for their ancient empire. The goblinoids of their chief enemies in the unhuman wars scattered, an impending victory snatched from their grasp as the bulk of their forces burned in the flow. A seemingly endless parade of powers-that-would-be surged, fought, died back, and re-surged like crashing waves in a storm.
