The Pale Stars

The skies of the Borderworld are strange and shifting, depending largely on which zone the observer is in. The inconstancy of the plane makes pinpointing suns or constellations difficult to impossible in some places. However, the stable Dark Zone known as the Borderworld Exodus has a unique phenomenon helps the elves of the place survive, and to some extent thrive, providing limited light and warmth in a region of the planes otherwise lacking in these qualities.   Though the Borderworld Exodus has no true horizon and slightly shifting boundaries, the five Pale Stars provide a sort of daily rhythm to life, circling the sky in elaborate patterns, fading in and out of existence. Bathing the Borderworld Exodus in pale blue light, the region is almost never lightless despite the planar influence of the Dark. The pale stars fade in and out, but at least one is always visible save rare events that occur perhaps once a century. The presence of a pale star also tells elves wandering the borderworld that they are close to home. The pale stars are also used by the Exodites to track the passage of time, and the number of stars in the sky marks the active hours of the day.   Perhaps more important than simple illumination to the elves, who are already attuned to low-light conditions, the pale stars allow plants to grow. This makes the Borderworld Exodus unique among Dark Zones, as most simply have no source of energy for plants to grow, and are sometimes actively hostile to the lifeforce of any living animal or plant. The pale stars are one of the only things the elves of Exodus truly believe is a blessing that does not come from their own efforts, as they provide them with a homeland that is safe from fae (who would not enter a Dark Zone under any circumstances), but also provides them with the means to grow food and maintain an existence.   Though the Starseers have attempted to understand why the pale stars persist in the sky, they have proven unknowable and unreachable. For lack of a better explanation, the elves somewhat grudgingly accept the pale stars as the counterexample to their philosophy that the universe is hostile and it is their lot to fight for their place in it.
