Instrument of Surrender

In the spring of 510, Soterum and its ruling lord Valenti Hagin were in a precarious position. Situated on a major road straight out of Atrans, Valenti was well aware that when the legion would be mustered to bring Rovs back into the fold, Soterum would be their first destination. In 507 the Rada was strong, and the Palatines were, as often was the case in recent decades, reeling from internal strife.

It was uncertain if the lords of the Rada would've been able to come to defend Soterum in force, and in the end they were indeed absent when the legion arrived. The timeline of events is not precisely known, but what is certain is that the forces under the command of Valenti Hagin had been ordered to stand down, and Hagin had been in contact with the Palatine general. It is believed Hagin realized that Soterum was likely to fall in either event, and sought to negotiate a peaceful settlement that allowed the legion through. A trusted messenger with a letter must have been sent to the Palatine camp, with Hagin's terms. As Hagin did not leave Soterum in the spring of 510, it is unknown how the general would've signaled his acceptance of the terms.

Aftermath

Hagin had already been considered half a Palatine by the Rada rebels, and most greeted the news of Soterum's bloodless surrender with disappointment but not surprise. Hagin's letter ensured that he would remain lord of Soterum, and has also kept the forces under his command uncommitted, having fought neither the forces of the Rada nor the Palatine legion. The area, which had been expected to bear the brunt of the fighting has also been relatively untouched as a result, though some reciprocal raiding has occurred between Soterum and the rest of Rovs.

I am so glad the letter led to a peaceful conclusion.
