Angerland

The newest power on the shores of the Great Bay, Angerland is nominally a kingdom but has no king. Seceded from the Kingdom of Kilth 15 years ago, Angerland has in the eyes of many become a functional vassal of the Caracs to their south since then. Ruled by a council of 5 dukes who rebelled against King Jarall Arkäntall, Angerland is a kingdom in name only, as the dukes are each the highest authority in the provinces that they govern.

Bordered to the east by the Kilthians and to the south by the Caracs, Angerland has recently been a battleground of these two powers. To the north across the Frostridge, the dukes of Angerland do not claim dominion, but neither does any other power. The lands so far north are too cold and dark for any people to inhabit in great number.

The five provinces of Angerland are Phyria in the furthest west, Angrian Kzar and the Southcoast in the southern parts of the realm, Central Angria in the inland, and West Tavaria in the far east of the realm, neighboring Kilth.

History

Since 200 years ago, the territories that are now Angerland were largely ruled by various petty kings, who were not much known beyond their immediate environs. Nevertheless, these petty realms did trade across the Great Bay, as well as occasionally fight with their neighbors. In the 300s, the Kilthians under the house of Arkäntall embarked on a campaign to conquer Angerland, deposing many of these petty kings and installing others as dukes under the King of Kilth.

Angerland remained a part of Kilth for almost 200 years, but the peoples of Angerland never considered themselves Kilthian, and the dukes of Angerland often considered their oaths to the king an unwelcome imposition at best. With the wars against the dragon Thatavor and the Runberi of the late 400s, Kilth had become both more demanding and weaker. Thus, with the aid of the Caracs of the south, Angerland claimed independence.

The Caracs were mostly interested in the iron mines of the Angerlanders, and the five dukes of Angerland have been unable to agree on who should be king of the new realm. Thus, a bickering council persists. Some of the lesser lords of West Tavaria even attempted to secede back into Kilth in an episode later named the "Short Treachery", but the attempt was crushed by the combined forces of the five dukes.

Demography and Population

Angerland is a large and diverse realm, home to humans, gnolls, and dwarves. The natives of the land are Angrians and Phyrians, but the east of the country has a substantial Kilthian minority dating back to the conquest almost 200 years ago. Much of the aristocracy is also Kilthian. In recent times, Caracs have also flowed into the southern parts of the country as part of the Ilumates' attempt to gain access to Angerland's iron.
