Bugbear
Aourrjhal
Bugbears are a race of peaceful ursine beings from the island of Raolghaar. The aourrhjal are rather isolationist, preferring to remain in the Raolghaarian subchain and often never straying too far from their home villages in the forest.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Bugbears are large, vaguely humanoid sophonts of ursine morphology. They are wide and stocky, with a low center of gravity and legs two thirds the length of their arms. Their paw-hands are large, padded, and clawed, but surprisingly dexterous. Their faces are somewhat flatter than other ursines and rather droopy, often appearing relaxed even under duress.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Bugbears live in small communes with no specific leader, with each member performing specialized community roles chosen by them at their coming-of-age ceremony.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Bugbears are found across the world in very small numbers, as the vast majority tend to remain in the Raolghaarian subchain of the Thalassaterrian archipelago.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
By far the strongest sense organ of a bugbear is its nose, able to detect the scent of a hibiscus flower at 2 kilometers' distance. This makes them excellent connoisseurs of fragrance and foods. Their hearing is also quite acute, though their sight is a bit poor.
Civilization and Culture
Major Language Groups and Dialects
The bugbear tribes speak a common tongue: guorrph.
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Bugbears have a deep reverence for nature, worshipping no deities but rather attempting to coexist with the spirits of the natural world.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Faeries have a profound cultural significance to bugbears, with ancient traditions holding them as the manifested forms of nature spirits. In modern times, fae and bugbears cooperate to farm the precious Raolghaarian teas and honey prized throughout the world for their exquisite flavors and health benefits.
