Description of Dutama
Dutama is a thriving port city nestled on the eastern coast of Katashaka, known for its strategic location along ancient trade routes and its breathtaking coastal vistas. The city is a melting pot of cultures, drawing influences from seafaring merchants, local tribes, and distant visitors.
- Dutama is built around a bay with an ancient waterfront build by a long lost civilization. It borders the vast jungles to the north west and plants, palm trees and ancient hardwoods can be found growing inside the city. The city is separated by the Yongling river and serves as a barrier between the slums and Satrap's district.
- The city is divided into five main districts:
- The Harbor District: A bustling port teeming with ships, fish markets, and merchant stalls. Here, exotic goods like rare spices, unique fauna, and enchanted artifacts are traded. Black sailed pirate vessels are often seen docked here.
- The Satrap's District: Higher up, overlooking the sea, lies the administrative and residential area, with grand halls, adorned with murals depicting the region's history and myths.
- The Jungle Outskirts: The outskirts are interwoven with Katashaka’s lush jungles, blending seamlessly with the city. This district is home to druids, shamans, and those who cultivate the potent herbs and plants unique to the region.
- The Slums: winding alleyways and dirt streets lined by many delapitated buildings. You'll find the majority of the people living in the slums as day laborers, porters, gatherers and fishermen.
- Fishtown: A mix of tents and simple buildings can be found south of the slums past the walls where most of the fishermen live. The fishmarket and the twin Temples of the Eternal Tides dedicated to Umberlee can be found here.
- The Satrap's Palace - the administrative center of Dutama and seat of power of the region. It is home to the royal appointed Satrap Xayevu the 17th, his family and a legion of scribes, administrators and aides. All of them live within the walls of the Satrap's district.
- The Tideguard's Garrison - the fortress and gatehouse is home to the garrison of the elite Tide Guard. Although more at home on the waves they're a formiddable fighting force on land dressed in their enchanted sea green plate armor and halberds. They patrol the upper city regulary and it's harbor.
- The Navigator's Guildhall - the building in the Satrap's District is home to the Guild of Navigator's. An important building for the maritime Kingdom of Sirokosa, they have an oppulent building in the administrative district.
- Tidebound Consortium - the merchant consortium has it's building in the harbor district in a magnificent stepped pyramid with hanging gardens, canals and fountains streaming down it's outer walls. Inside is cool and gloriously decorated.
- The Twin Temples of the Tides - the temple of Umberlee and The Eternal Tide are identical and build near Fish Town in the lower city.
- The Temple of Ubtao - the temple dedicated to the Father of Dinosaurs is located just outside the city in the outskirts of the dense jungle. Made from ancient stones and adorned with intricate reliefs made from the bones of these ancient creatures.
- The Azure Spire - a huge winding tower build in the middle of the slums is home to the Azure Fellowship of Mages. The tower is completely smooth and shows no doorways or windows so it's a mystery how anyone enters and leaves this building.
- The Pearl Bazaar - a large market to the north of the Satrap's District with many shops selling exotic spices, fruits, cakes, sweets, hardwoods, magical trinkets and various items.
- Dutama’s residents are a mix of locals who revere the land's primal forces and immigrants drawn by the city's allure.
- The city celebrates the Festival of Tides, a biannual event marking the high and low tides with rituals, feasts, and waterborne competitions.
- The architecture is a blend of coral-encrusted stonework, timber from the surrounding jungles, and colorful textiles that flutter in the sea breeze.
- Dutama is renowned for exporting:
- Exotic hardwoods.
- Rare alchemical ingredients from the jungle.
- Unique gemstones found along the coastline.
- Imports include metalwork, arcane artifacts, and grains from distant lands.
A guild of merchants, known as the Tidebound Consortium, controls much of the city’s commerce, balancing trade alliances and internal power struggles - The harbour is often used by pirates and privateers for reloading, restocking and refitting their ships and selling off their ill gotten gains in the markets. Many locals join the crews of these vessels as well.
- The people of Dutama worship a mix of primal spirits and gods like Ubtao (influential in the southern regions of Toril), alongside lesser-known sea deities.
- Local myths tell of a submerged temple beneath the bay, said to house an artifact tied to Katashaka's ancient history.
