Ampleforth

Summary

Ampleforth, nestled in the hills two days' ride from Neverwinter, suggests a small, perhaps peaceful town with a rustic charm. Its location in the hills hints at potential interactions with nature, hidden secrets, or even a role as a waypoint for travelers or adventurers heading deeper into the wilderness. The town is a natural stop for traders traveling between Neverwinter and the more remote hill or forest settlements.

History

The town was founded by the Terramourn family as a seat of government for the farmlands surrounding the town. Over time houses were built and a thriving town with an inn, tavern, shops and a temple can be found in the hills. Currently the lord Cherdante Terramourn and lady Zorhale Terramourn rule over the town and it's environs.

The fortress town

Dominating the center of the town is Terramourn Manor as an imposing feature build on top of a hill adds a feudal and hierarchical dynamic to the town, blending governance with spiritual leadership. A deep ditch encircles the walls, with a single fortified gatehouse that serves as the only entry. The walls are covered in divine glyphs dedicated to the Goddess Deneir. It’s both a defensive measure and a reminder of the lord’s power. Rising above the manor is the Glyphspire, a tower housing the private study of Lady Zorhale, where she keeps sacred texts, records, and relics dedicated to Deneir.

The Crypt of Glyphs - beneath the manor lies an ancient vault said to contain relics of Deneir, including fragments of lost texts and magical glyphstones. It is guarded zealously by the Glyphguard and accessible only to Lady Zorhale and those she deems worthy. Some claim that the crypt beneath the manor harbors something older than the town itself—an artifact or entity tied to the hills’ folklore, influencing both the Terramourns and the town’s fate.

Economy

Ampleforthians value hard work and cooperation, as life in the hills requires mutual support. Community gatherings, like harvest festivals or group hunting expeditions, are key to their culture. Everyone contributes, whether tending livestock, gathering herbs, or crafting goods.

Ampleforth's economy is shaped by its rural location, proximity to the hills, and the dual influence of the Terramourn Manor and the town’s connection to Deneir. Much of the surrounding land belongs to the Terramourns, worked by tenant farmers. The fertile soil and temperate climate support crops such as barley, oats, and root vegetables.

Sheep are the primary livestock, providing wool for textiles and meat for trade. The town’s hills are ideal for grazing, and the town is known for its high-quality wool. Artisans work this into beautiful tapestries, rugs and carpets as well as fine cloth, textiles and garments.

The town thrives on small-scale crafts. Wool weaving, woodcarving, and brewing are common trades, with Ampleforth’s honey mead being a notable export. Local artisans embed patterns of stars, hills, or mythical beasts into their wares, reflecting the town’s lore. While Ampleforth may seem rustic, its reverence for Deneir manifests in a surprisingly advanced appreciation for written and visual art. Many residents are retired priests and skilled in illuminated manuscripts, intricate woodcarvings, or embroidery that incorporates sacred glyphs and symbols of knowledge.

Positioned near the midway point between Neverwinter and Neverwinter Woods, Ampleforth serves as a resting point for rangers, druids, adventurers, and wanderers. Inns and taverns, like The Restful Hearth or The Starry Pint, pride themselves on hearty meals, warm fires, and stories shared over ale. However, strangers are always subtly vetted by the watchful townsfolk for potential danger.

Religion and customs

The townsfolk have a deep respect for the natural world. Many follow druidic traditions or worship deities of nature, such as Silvanus or Chauntea. Seasonal changes are celebrated with rituals, and there’s a widespread belief in honoring the land to ensure its bounty.

Tales of the hills abound in Ampleforth. Elders speak of mysterious ruins hidden in the heights, fey creatures that bless—or trick—travelers, and the old songs that call to unseen spirits. Children grow up hearing warnings to avoid certain caves or glades, but adventurers often visit the town seeking guidance to explore these myths.

    Seasonal Festivals
  • Deneir’s Festival: The Day of the First Glyph
Each year, Ampleforth celebrates Deneir with this festival. The town comes alive with storytelling competitions, public readings, and art displays. Children inscribe their first glyphs on parchment as a rite of passage, and artisans showcase their finest illuminated works. At dusk, the townsfolk release lanterns marked with sacred symbols, asking for Deneir’s guidance.
  • Spring’s Rebirth: Marked by planting rituals and floral garlands, this festival asks for blessings on crops and livestock.
  • Midsummer’s Glow: A night of feasting and dancing around hilltop bonfires, symbolizing the strength of community.
  • Harvest Moon Feast: A grand celebration of the year’s bounty with contests, like sheep-shearing or archery.
  • Twilight Vigil: Held in late autumn, this somber event honors ancestors and remembers lost travelers, with lanterns floated into the night sky.
