In the year 1980 on the Hurikami clan calendar, the Neogi came.  Swarms of Nightspiders spilled into the clan holdings, destroying settlements and taking slaves.  When the Hurikami fought back, the Neogi response was to wage a genocidal war on the dwarves. 

It is now 1983 HR (Hurikami Reckoning). Much has been lost. The surviving members of the clan have retreated into bunkers beneath the shattered surfaces of their worlds in the Hurikami wildspace. The Neogi continue to attack, and the dwarven defenses are weakening. 

 When all seemed lost the prayers of the dwarven priests were answered, and the spirit of the astral dragon Yamato appeared to the priests in a series of visions.  As a result of those visions, teams of the best artificers, shipwrights, and spellweavers slipped through the Neogi blockade and found the resting place of Yamato.  Over the course of the next year the dwarves worked in secret to build a ship on the desiccated remains of the dragon, turning the carcass into the largest, finest, and most powerful battlejammer the dwarves have ever created. They christened it Yamato, after the dragon that made it possible.

 The Yamato launched with a skeleton crew of shipwrights and artificers, captained by the veteran Admiral Akita, returning from retirement to captain the Yamato and save the Hurikami people..

 The spirit of the astral dragon, bound to the ship and making much of its special capabilities possible, has promised that if the Hurikami dwarves can find Iscandar, the lost homeworld of the Astral Dragons, they will find the magic they need to ultimately defeat the Neogi for good and restore the lost Hurikami world. 

 In The Yamato’s escape, however, neogi spies discovered the Yamato and since then, the ship has been on the run from the neogi swarms trying to capture the ship and cut off the last hope of the Hurikami.

 The Yamato has been searching the Astral Sea for Iscandar, one step ahead of the Neogi, for more than a year.  Far from home, the dwarves have had to fill out their crew with replacements from the peoples they have met along the way, so The Yamato has become a melting pot of people, all bound to the ship, each other, and the quest to find a way to defeat the Neogi once and for all.
