Earth Republic
Founded in 2084 as a transnational entity designed to govern Earth and its soon to come colonies as it emerged on to the galactic stage, the Earth Republic rapidly superseded the various national bodies. By 2110 it had completely subsumed all of the national entities, leaving them merely as administrative regions on the planet. The Republic grew rapidly, allying itself and slowly absorbing several alien species, starting with the protectorate of Belphon. Many of the species in the former Orion confederacy flocked to the banner of the fairly xenophillic Republic. The Orion Confederacy itself joined the Republic in 2156. The following decades were generally peaceful and prosperous. Relationships blossomed with the Aramedians and the Rojans, even the Mem'par'aci warmed up to them after the cooling in their relationship during the Rojan rebellion.
By the beginning of the 23rd century however cracks were beginning to show. The nine year 'Steel Depression' from 2217-2226 is generally considered to be the end of the golden age. Minor conflicts began to intensify. The major parties seemed unwilling to act to help the common people. Then in 2250 the neighbouring Porlack Dominions struck. In a brutal conflict that would quickly come to be known as the 47 days war, the Porlacks invaded and devestated the colony of Kurgengard. A Republic counterattack quickly took Kurgengard back and the went on to destroy the Porlack homeworlds and nearly wipe out their species. This set the Republic on a path of militarization that continued for several decades during which they waged wars with several of their neighbors, subjugating several of the more warlike races. That policy was challenged by the Gyota crisis of 2286 which led directly to the election of Marcus Gordon as president in 2288, now in 2289 he seems poised to lead the republic away from war and back into a more peaceful age.
