The Archives

Soulbank's history lies in the Archives, a collection of previous states of everything that has ever existed there. It is unknown how far back in time the Archives go, some truly ancient beings, code, and objects have been and still can be unearthed. The Archives are not a physical space, but thought of as part of the nature of things. With a successful Restore function, anything can theoretically be returned to an earlier state. Most frequently, the Restore function is used as a means of repair: The repairer finds an earlier working state of an object and reverts it.

Those with an interest in archaeology are known for reconstructing ruins to find out more about a server's history. It's known, however, that digging too deep into the Archives can unleash ancient beings and Glitch that slumber in the world's history, waiting to be brought to the present. Some beings have gone so far as to revise the Archives for their own purposes, though such endeavors are fraught with their own dangers similar to those in fiction about time travel. Some parts of Soulbank's Recall process also depend on the Archives, leading toward possibilities altering the public's collective recollections by meddling with the Archives.

While anyone can access the Archives, its strange quirks often make it akin to magic for many, leaving it to the experts for fear of unexpected consequences. Such experts are commonly known as Wielders and Capacitors, who are often known for being eccentric. Archival skills are in demand where security is a concern, both for creating security measures and bypassing them. Warding Subroutines are a common security measure, attacking those who attempt to tamper with an object's history.
