Coin and Other Currencies

The primary currency of Soulbank is simply referred to as Coin. It is supposedly backed by priority access to Memory, one of the few truly scarce resources of the world. Though various financial institutions attempt to produce competing currencies, Coin remains the primary liquid asset. Coin is typically minted as memory is freed up by deleting old data, but the supply is not strictly limited by the amount of currently available data. Genuine Coin is "lightweight" meaning it does not take up MEM slots to carry, but it is often stored in containers that are designed to be cumbersome.

Cobalt Server produces resources with an encoded scarcity that sometimes serve as the basis of competing currencies, such as Diamond and Electrum, but these currencies are more volatile and subject to market manipulation by Cobalt's mining consortiums. In general, one MEM slot of these currencies are about 1 Coin in value, though this is subject to fluctuation and local demand. Smaller amounts are typically represented by a Fortune roll.

Cryptocurrency is also hustled in financial institutions, but is generally the least stable. Some eccentric numismatists collect defunct crypto and will pay handsomely for samples that evade deletion. Most citizens, however, are currently skeptical, especially with Administration discouraging crypto mining as a misuse of Soulbank's processing power and memory.
