Spirit

Spells cast only with their spirit are controllable but unsophisticated.

Background

Spirit is one of the three elements which can be used to access Ardency (a person's innate pool of magical energy), the others being Empathy and Intellect.   A spellcaster is able to access their Ardency using only Spirit, but there are limits as to what these spells can do, particularly in terms of the amount of power they are able to exert.

Spirit

Spirit is intrinsically linked to the abdomen and the essence of a person. This is more than a person knowing themself, although that is related to it. This is about a person being able to know who they are at their darkest and love themselves for that.

Accessing Spirit

In order to access Spirit, a person needs to connect with their understanding of who they are. One way of doing this is imagining themselves physically doing the thing they need the spell to do. Another way would be tapping into an emotional part of themselves. Or perhaps they use their understanding of their own physicality.   For example, a spellcaster may be using Spirit to cast a spell to pick up a pen. They could focus on the pen and think:
About picking up the pen and moving it as they want to,
  Or they might think:
About a time when they have felt strong.
Perhaps they are trying to use Spirit to cast a spell of silence across the room they are in. They could:
Focus on being as silent and as still as they can and take the room with them.
These different methods may depend on the spellcaster or the type of spell they are trying to cast. Using Spirit with other elements can allow for more complex spells and powerful spells.

Improving Spirit

There are a few different ways for a spellcaster to improve their skills in Spirit. These include:
  • Spend time in nature
  • Tree-hugging
  • Laughing
  • Singing
  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Expressing creativity
  • Moments of gratitude

Strengths & Weaknesses

Like each of the three elements, Spirit has pros and cons when using it. An Adept is able to use all three elements to balance out each other, but even then understanding this balance and which way to tip the scales, so to speak, is crucial for getting the right effect.

Strengths

Spells which are cast with Spirit come from within and are therefore very easy to control and maintain by the spellcaster.

Weaknesses

Spirit is a very raw element, and as a result, spells which are cast using it tend to be quite simplistic and lacking in the nuance of others.
