First Certitude

Background

There are six core beliefs of Sanctuary. These beliefs were laid out in the words of the prophet when Sanctuary was founded, and have been passed down from one generation to the next. These beliefs are broken up into three tiers, known as Certitudes, the first being the most important.

Purpose

The Certitudes were documented in order to provide a structure to Sanctuary. The prophet documented their truths and, in doing so, created a belief system which allows those who follow it to become a prime.

Location

They were recorded as a digital file, which is held on the top floor of the Tower of Solace, the aptly named Level of Certitude. It is accessible only by the current parent and anyone they choose to allow into this sacred chamber.

The documents themselves may only be viewed by the parent, but the Titles of the Certitudes are held dear to all so that they might gleam their truth.
All six Certitudes rely on each other, but there is a reason they are structured in this way, otherwise the prophet would not have done so. Many believe this is because the First Certitude is the most important, while others suggest that without the first, the others may not be true.

The Document

The document itself takes the form of a digital recording which can be accessed as text, voice or holographic image. It was originally recorded as text, written in Sanctuary's language, but can be translated into any of the saved 764 languages on the system.
The First Certitude is over 12,000 words long and goes into an excessive amount of detail about all the ways in which the prophet believes the universe to be broken. As it is too long to include all of it here, below are two extracts, the first from the beginning of the certitude and the second from the end. They have been selected as they typify the more important themes of the First Certitude.

The First Certitude

The universe is breaking.

Let there be no doubt that this is true. We all see it. Every day there are avoidable deaths, needless destruction and preventable divisions.
We are falling apart. The universe is falling apart.
I have watched and wondered how no one else is as able to see it. They go about their day-to-day lives completely ignoring the fact that everything is crumbling around them. We are at the end of days and yet they worry about the most insignificant things. Are they wearing the right clothes? Do they have the right connections? Have they bought the right stuff? All of it is meaningless.
Wars beget wars beget wars and history keeps repeating itself at a faster and faster rate. It's like a top spinning ever faster and parts are flying off in all directions.

Extract from the End

The universe is breaking. The cracks are showing and only getting larger at the moment. It is coming apart around us and there is nothing we can do to fix it. It is far too late for that.
The universe is breaking and until we come to terms with that we are all as lost as those who chose to ignore it. We have no hope of fixing it but if we know something is a problem we can manage it.
The universe is breaking, but it is not yet broken. There is still time to make it work for us. We have time to choose not to break with it. There is another way. There has to be.
