Ekel Krugx

I know some Goblins, directly out of Ekel Krugx, who run a shop down by the warf. As much as I'm loath to go down there, they have always procured the most beautiful jewelry for me. It's well worth the trip, I promise. Last time I visited, they had a wonderful necklace set with jet and an Abyss Pearl. I had to pay them a small fortune, but it was well worth it, don't you think? The way it catches in the sun-

Structure

The organization of Ekel Krugx very closely mirrors that of the Varlishi Dukedom, being focused around trade families that hold almost all the political power. While there isn't a position like the Ducé in Goblin society and the merchant families simply do their own thing until another family gets in their way, then those two duke it out for the right to continue their own plans.

Culture

A society based around Mercantilism, Goblin society prides itself on the ability to amass fortunes. Strangely enough, and going against unfair stereotypes, they have far more respect for those that amass their fortunes through morally acceptable practices like trading or mercenary work. While those that amass money through things like drug running and other criminal practices end up on the bottom of the social totem pole.

Assets

There is a large amount of material wealth within the borders of Ekel Krugx, in the process of being imported and exported. Gold, wine, fabrics, technology, and anything else that a rational person might want to purchase

History

As is often the case with the nations of Sol Nua, one might wonder where a people like the Goblins could come from. Evidence points to them being an offshoot of Orcs (evidenced by similar bone structure, makeup within Tapestry, and the same dental structure resulting in small tusks). Now, it can't be said with 100% confidence that the Goblins of Ekel Krugx are related to the Orcs that we currently coexist with or if they just happen to come from a very similar species, but the general consensus is that the species we know are directly related.   One might think that a relation would cause the two species to be close or remain allies but in all reality, the two of them keep a respectful distance from each other. Perhaps seeing a species much bigger or smaller than themselves causes them to remain wary of each other.   Ekel Krugx, as strange as it might seem to outside eyes, is a natural crystalization of Goblin society. From their tribal roots, their social nature and small stature necessitated that individual tribes gather; eventually forming semi-mobile enclaves and permanent settlements soon after. Quickly developing early warning systems so that their Carbineer's can get in position and properly harass the enemy.   While their neighbors and cousins, the Orcs of Khagra, had the misfortune of meeting the Svartel Dichotomy before another power; it had the side effect of shielding the nascent Goblins from the majority of the conflict. Thinking they had bigger and far more tusked fish to fry, the Dichotomy left the Goblins alone. But the Goblins didn't leave them. Quickly opening up a dialogue, the Goblins started selling everything they could to the Dichotomy. Scraps of gold and silver they managed to dig up. Planks of acacia wood from their native forests. Flints fit for muskets. Anything.   With the several fortunes they made, they bought muskets and modern farming and mining equipment, leading to an explosion of population and industry. Their military rapidly modernized in a way that has only been seen in a few other places in history. In a few short years, Ekel Krugx has solidified into a nation and positioned itself to stand amongst the greats.   Their 'neutral' weapons dealing between Orc and Elf hadn't earned them any friends, however. The Dichotomy, far from spent, decided that it might be more cost-effective to capture a nation with fully formed infrastructure and so started to close a noose around the newborn nation they had unintentionally helped create. Untested and unsure of it's power, Ekgel Krugx looked to the outside world for help.   They found Corlé waiting with a smile. A long time enemy of the Dichotomy, they wished to assist the goblins purely to spite them. And spite them they did. Stationing several regiments at key invasion point, assisting in the construction of forts and the training of a legitimate officer corps, the Corlésian expeditionary forces successfully avoided a war on Goblin soil.

Demography and Population

The Goblins of Ekel Krugx have almost their whole country to themselves, based totally on the fact that the grand majority of species cannot fit comfortably within their architecture. While they do build more sizable facilities for the traders that flow through their nation, many do not stay long. Other small races, such as Kobold and Petals do make their home in Ekel Krugx, though usually only if they are interested in a career in trading.

Military

One should not be surprised to learn that the army of Ekel Krugx cannot really be referred to as 'heavy-hitting'. consisting of 95% light infantry and scouts, their greatest strength lies with their ability to have up to date information on enemy positions and remain either underfoot or out of reach depending on what is needed.   To this end, the Goblin Tirailleur are universally equipped with just enough equipment to keep them in the field and ahead of the enemy. Equipped with carbines instead of rifles (Goblin eyesight is not conducive to sharpshooters or long-ranged combat) and light packs, military officials the world over have struggled to match the speed of deployment the Goblins can bring to bear.

Foreign Relations

As all good traders of merit, the Goblins maintain a good relation with most every nation in the known world, though they tend to keep politics at a distance unless they feel an opportunity is present.   They do not play well, however, with the Varlishi. Unsurprisingly, since both primarily based around trade, they often but heads. Not only that, but Goblin society takes issue with the well known 'ends justify the means' temperament of the Varlishi. Thinking them underhanded and undeserving of their wealth.
