Mickini's World Salvage Corps
The Salvage Corps is the Planetary Defence Force of Mickini's world who operate under the auspices of the Lord of Ruin.
Due to their primary role on their homeworld being that of collection of scrap and fighting off of scrap-poachers, rogue traders, mutated wildlife and numerous rebellious enclaves that still exist, they are often looked down on by others as poorer cousins and barely civilised, yet many a regiment has been made to eat its words when a unit of Salvors have retrieved tank hulls that can be repaired or even used their natural born ingenuity to keep fighting vehicles operational mid combat
They, along with their planet, are not fully integrated members of the Kuati Confederacy, existing as an allied state through one or two marriages and ancient trade agreements between the Lord of Ruin and the Kuati Senate, as such should a tithing fleet arrive in the sector the Salvage Corp will form their own regiments and not contribute to Kuati Regiments as other planets in the confederacy do.
Structure
The Salvage Corps regiments are drawn directly from the PDF and are not as rigidly as the Kuati regiments, largely due to their origins are armed salvage crews. The Departmento Munitorum allows for a lot of flexibility across regiments of the Imperium which the Corps embrace, but something are set in stone and even the Salvage Corps adhere to it - each Regiment is led by a Colonel, and is subdivided into Salvage Companies and that's where the regular structuring ends.
Within a Regiment, each company is given a role and is then further organised to better accomplish their role - supply companies will be orgnaised into squadrons entirely mounted in vehicles to transport quantities of material, fuel, victuals etc; athe regiment's Prospector Company will also be squadron based with whatever vehicles are best for the theatre of war they find themselves in- sentinels, on foot, the odd Salamander- as well as additional equioment to analyse battlefield intelligence; whereas a support company may be entirely on foot with guardsmen divided as support platoons, each spread to provide manpower where its required.
The role of a Salvor is typically depicted by the colour of their beret, which is standard across all Salvage Corp Regiments:
Brown - Combat Support & Supply
Emerald Green - Prospector Company
Culture
Coming from a junk world with minimal resources and a population to support, not to mention tithes to answer, it's hardly surprising that the Salvage Corps are imbued with a strong repair culture. To a Salvor, the right application of lateral thinking can lead to successful outcomes and so they are very adept at adapting to differing situations and finding ways out when other regiments would have floundered or felt a naïve last stand would be best. This sees the Mickinian Regiments often attached as combat support regiments, where their culture and outlook serve the Imperial war machine best, rather than frontline units, although some commanders have been able to adapt companies into highly effective reconnaissance and artillery spotter units as they are perfect for operating beyond conventional supply chains
Mickinians are experts at jury rigging and keeping things running, whether its a vehicle or a lasgun, which often puts them at odds with Enginseers, yet few can fail to see the value of such regiments when they can honour the Machine Spirits by giving them further changes to extract vengeance for the damage they've suffered. During one of the first conflicts a Salvage Corps Regiment was deployed in the Astra Militarum, an unknown enginseer was ready to bring thousands of charges of techno-heresy against the regiment which was currently away on the front lines, only to see it as a rebuke from the Omnissiah when the regiment returned with their trademark Goliath vehicles being escorted by a demi-company of Leman Russes (still manned by most of the original crews whom the presiding General has assumed killed in action) and all vehicles were towing the partial hulk of an Mars pattern baneblade. Rumour persists that this enginseer was the first to set up a small tech-shrine on Mickini's World which now accepts acolytes whom wish to learn a new sub-doctine of the Cult Mechanicus, which focussed on the resurrection of holy tech
Assets
Their world is not one of vast resources- indeed their whole lives and culture revolve around salvaging the junk of other worlds and Adepti to to survive - and this is reflected on the equipment carried into battle.
Each Salvor wears a hardened and reinforced version of industrial wear, similar to that found in hive cities across the galaxy, designed to protect the wearer in the barren landscapes of Mickini's World whilst providing webbing points to enable the wearer to examine, collect and break down salvage for reprocessing. The standard armament is a lasgun as it is an inherently simply device to construct in the few facturums the world has and empty charge packs can be recharged to reduce the need to produce more, making it the ideal weapon for the Corps
In terms of vehicles, the Corps repurpose vehicles originally designed for industrial processes, such as the Goliath truck and sentinels, and take them into war with them. The world doesn't have the capacity to produce battle tanks or even Chimeras and so will never see service with such machines. That being said, a Salvage party breaking down the hulk of a captured vessel which the Imperial Navy had brought to the world, came across a macro-hold of uncommissioned Chimeras which were quickly assimilated to the PDF, many entering the Lord of Ruins household regiments and some seeing active service in the Imperial Guard. Only a handful of their vehicles have ever returned from service and out of those that did, most were not in a functional condition and were either amalgamated to create functional chimeras or were simply broken down
History
The Salvage Corps origins are found in a time when the remnants of the Imperial Army who were given rights of settlement for Mickini's World after bringing it back to The Emperor's light.
The world now depends on salvaging the wrecks of the wartorn past and the junk of other worlds to survive, some of which is valuable enough to attract Rogue Traders, Cold traders and pirate groups who want to claim the riches without giving the Lord of Ruin his due. The scrap wastes are also full of rebel groups whom seek to undo the Lord of Ruins empire.
It falls to the Salvage Corps now to reclaim the wrecks, especially those of greater value whilst dealing with these opposition groups, sometimes at the barrel of a gun, whilst also maintaining security and planetary compliance to the will of the Lord of Ruin
