Carl Whalen Character in Skelleyville-verse | World Anvil

Carl Whalen

The patriarch of the Whalen family. Carl is a strongly-built man even in his old age. A combination of Sardinian Wildcat, Mountain Hare and Otter make him look rather imposing; his cunning eyes are slit-pupiled and his shoulders remain sharp. He can throw a mean right hook even now.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Fit but old. He's got the bearing that suggests he was truly intimidating in his youth. Brown fur, mottled with grey and white fur. Wildcat stripes. The powerful legs of a hare.

Body Features

Thick, rudderlike tail. Quite the swimmer in his youth.

Facial Features

A 'beard' of fur down from his chin. A 'mustache' down his cheeks. One of his ears is entirely gone, but this is often covered with a cap.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Carl is motivated by a desire to ensure his family survives the slow turn of time. He knows, thanks to family history, how events can quickly spiral out of one's control. He doesn't want to see that happen to his family.

Social

Social Aptitude

Carl is incredibly socially intimidating. He stands with a wide posture, maintains eye contact, and ensures contact with his equally-strong handshake, refusing to let go until the other individual begins to feel uncomfortable. Very charismatic, but in the sort of way that feels threatening when you don't do what he wants. Carl doesn't need to threaten you outright. He's got the money and means to ruin your life without a threat, and he knows it.   Powerful confidence. Guy fills a room and he's aware of it. He doesn't preen, though; he is an old man who has incredible wealth to his name, to his family's name. He knows people want to be him. He knows that others wouldn't spare a tear if he died. It doesn't bother him.   Carl's manners are on point, of course. He is sure to be courteous, even when he's implying someone had better get in line before they have an accident at a factory his family owns. This politeness goes a long way, and explains why he has so many kids. He's hard to read. Bluster and threats don't particularly phase him. Neither do reminders of his age. He knows how old he is. He knows. He feels his body failing.

As far as he's concerned, when someone has to bring that up, they've already lost.
