Whalen Family Organization in Skelleyville-verse | World Anvil

Whalen Family

History

The Whalen family made its initial wealth off of the Whalen-Bedford mine, which their ancestor Harvest-Bounty Whalen seized control of by (quite literally) backstabbing his business partner, Colton Bedford.

Demography and Population

The Whalen family has about thirty main-family members. There are a various amount of cousins, second cousins, and bastards, but the main family which can directly trace itself back to Harvest-Bounty take great pride in this immediate relation.

Territories

The Whalen Family controls the Whalen-Bedford mine and its surrounding territories, of course, but also has a strong hand in the east side of Skelleyville, which butts up against the mining-hills initially used by Harvest-Bounty Whalen centuries ago.

Laws

Within the Whalen family, an individual is expected to keep their mouth shut when they are addressing anyone of law. The number one rule is don't snitch. While this is true for the other families -- and indeed, the only family to take it more seriously are the Mason-Tafts-- the Whalens have been known to close ranks around their own even when defending against incredibly egregious charges.   The basic law, then, is "scratch mine, I'll scratch yours."

Trade & Transport

Whalen goods include alcohol and the occasional brick of cocaine, but unlike some of the other families of Skelleyville, the Whalens work almost entirely above board. Coal used to be the keystone of their enterprise, but in times that are slowly trying to change to a more environmentally-friendly solution, coal is no longer the end-all be-all that it previously was thought to be.   Now, the Whalen family is attempting to get in ahead of the pack with regards to windmills, nuclear energy, and other renewable resources. Skellyville is small, of course, but in modern nights it is the Whalen family who sprung the concept of a wind farm in one of the plains beneath Skelleyville.
