Ataraxia

Ataraxia is a narcotic drug that dampens feelings and nerve signals. In smaller doses, it's used as an anti-anxiety drug as it dampens the intensity of emotions and mental reactions. In larger doses, it starts to quell physical sensations as pain, as well as making limbs harder to move. If too much Ataraxia is taken the user will be unable to move and think at all, or even die as the whole body completely shuts down.

Production

Ataraxia is produced by drying the leaves of a specific plant. The plant can be used without drying as well, but as it has highly variable water content and the drug is so potent that even the smallest fault in dosage can be lethal it's much safer to use dried leaves instead of non-dried ones.

Usage

The main way to use Ataraxia is to smoke it. Some brew tea from it or eat it to get the effect, but as the leaves have a highly bitter and unpleasant flavor it's easier to smoke it. The smoke is inhaled through simple pipes made from wood or clay.

Availability

Due to the stigma surrounding the use of Ataraxia no merchant wants to be related to the drug at all, making it only available through shady sellers. It's not extremely hard to grow in the southern half of Shireon, so most of the users who have access to a garden grow it themselves. This has a negative aspect as most sellers have enough knowledge about the dosage to sell their merchandise already carefully divided into doses while growing it yourself will rob you from that security. This is apparent as most deaths from using too much Ataraxia happens among users who grow their own.

Social Stigma

Although not illegal, Ataraxia is not generally socially accepted in most parts of Shireon. Users of the drug are generally seen as less productive members of society as they rely on drugs to being able to handle the ups and downs of life.
