Book 1
Marquin's character development in Book 1 is focused on her growing to have the capacity of being a good and happy person and the capacity of recognizing that her childhood and her Abuela (Gracía Martínez) were messed up. I say capacity because Marquin doesn't become any of those things, but she's now capable of being those things. She learns to open up both emotionally and to other ideas. Well, at the end of the book she returns to her state of pushing everyone around her away but you can still feel the difference. Regarding her mental health, that definitively takes a plummet in the beginning of the book. Later it returns to what it was before. Which definitely wasn't good but it's good enough for her to function and see behind her own depression. At the end of the book her mental health plummets again to a place even worse.Book 2
Marquin's character development in Book 2 is focused on her understanding her childhood and how Abuela treated her by observing Dodo. The Queen treats Dodo very similarly to how Abuela treats Marquin. Since Dodo is only a little kid in Marquin's eyes, Marquin learns that nobody should treat little kids like that and that it's never the kid's fault. Marquin manages to develop compassionate for herself and forgives herself for acting so horrible. She also forgives Edine. Dodo also gets inspires her to get her stuff together and get her determination back. Marquin's mental health is the worst it's ever been in the beginning of the book. She feels like she entirely alone in the world, ruined her only friendship left, is at fault for her other friend dying, and she feels completely powerless and wants to give up on life. Once again her mental health gets to the point where she can concentrate and focus on other things besides her sadness but it's still not good.Physical Description

Marquin is insanely fit. She's an expert with a sword, fighting nature Demonss, and fighting hand to hand. She's tall, faintly muscular, and perfectly healthy. However she's also disabled. Marquin has a prosthetic leg, starting at right above the knee. Since her amputation happened because of an injury, she experiences phantom pain. Additionally she has Energy Blindness.

Marquin is a Nature Shifter, and specializes in plant Energy. She's one of the strongest plant shifters around. Her Energy looks like flames. It's colored a dark green.

She has a black backpack with a sword holder. Rich Jackson makes her a specialized sword that's connected to her Energy. The connection can be turned on and off. If it's turned on the sword will follow Marquin if she isn't holding it.

Personal history
Marquin's Mama moved to the US from Mexico for college. A few years or so before, Edine's parents had bought and moved into a farm in the US. They had one boy child. While at college, Mama gets addicted to drugs, starts dating a dude, and gets pregnant. She freaks out and goes to visit her sister, Edine's mom, and discovers Edine's mom is also pregnant (with Edine). They make a plan. Mama drops out of college, breaks up with the dude, moves onto the farm, and their mother (Abuela) moves to the farm. Edine and Marquin are born.
When Marquin was 7 years old, Gracía Martínez had Marquin fight a full grown Nature Demon for the first time. Abuela messes up and half looses control of the Demon half simply goes too hard on Marquin. Everything quickly goes south and Marquin is overpowered by the Demon. Abuela attempts to use Life potions and remedies on Marquin, however Marquin just won't get better and her leg gets worse and worse. When Marquin's life appears to be in danger, Abuela finally takes her to the ER and they discover Marquin's leg has a life threatening infection. They end up amputating it.
Over her whole life Marquin's Mama is on and off drugs, giving Marquin some abandonment/mommy issues. Marquin and Edine are tight as can be, and fight like an old married couple. Till sophomore year in highschool when Mama is back on drugs, so Marquin is lashing out and Edine is growing apart. By junior year everyone is struggling and Edine is making new friends while Marquin is still alone. After Marquin lashes out at Edine's new friend, Edine erupts and tells Marquin they need space. This is where Book 1 starts.
Education
Marquin was homeschooled with Edine and Edine's older brother for grades k-8. Mostly her Abuela homeschooled her, sometimes with help from her mom. Her Abuela focused on teaching Marquin how to fight nature Demons, mostly with shifting and sword fighting. Abuela's next area of focus was languages/reading/writing and Shifter's history and culture. Marquin's mom would spontanuously try to help with academic subjects and communicating with plant Demons. However usually that would end in an argument. Edine's parents helped teach Marquin how to take care of the farm and do math, but spent much more time teaching Edine. In her spare time Marquin focused on becoming a better fighter. So all three kids were very behind in normal academic subjects. Especially the American versions. Which proved a promblem in highschool. For highschool they enrolled in the town's public highschool.
Morality & Philosophy
Marquin believes that the most important part of life is to fight Demons. If you're assigned a quest you must finish it to the end, even if it kills you. "Above all else, you must complete the mission." -Her Abuela.
Secondly, her whole life her Abuela has told her that the second most important thing is to survive. Marquin doesn't realize Abuela means to survive even at the expense of other people, so Marquin's second most important part of life is to keep her loved ones alive. To protect them. Then to keep herself alive and safe.
Marquin thinks being tough and unempathetic is the best way to teach and help other people because of the way she was raised.
Marquin doesn't spend time thinking about philosophy. She believes it's a waste of time and that it's better focus on the present and your own business.

- Smart as a whip. Dare I say genius. Completes school work, makes battle plans, escape routes, etc. with ease.
- She intuitively knows people's biggest insecurities, secrets, and motivations and can piece together their next move and how to manipulate them. This is good for battle.
- Marquin uses words as weapons. When in a tough spot, she can think of an accusation/comment that will feel like a punch.
- To people she's close with and loves a lot, she's loyal to the point of sacrificing other people in order to keep her loved ones safe.
- Marquin is extremely compassionate and generous to her loved ones.

Marquin's tone of voice barely ever changes from flat or neutral or cold.
She has an American accent and she can easily imitate a Mexican accent.
To most people's surprise Marquin doesn't curse very often. She doesn't talk that much and when she does it's thought out and deliberate. The exception to this is when she's very passionate she can go on long rants. Likewise when she's very angry she doesn't think before she speaks (this is when she curses) but always says the perfect thing to express her anger, threaten someone, or hurt someone. She never stutters or goes "ummm...".
Relationships
History
Edine and Marquin have been best friends and lived on the same farm since birth. Their mothers were both pregnant at the same time (coincidentally). They're complete opposites and basically soulmates. They're the ying to the other's yang kind of thing. They complete each other, they're part of each other and make each other happy. Over the years they've had a lot of fights, varying in severity. But they've always been able to make up. So when they have a fight at the beginning of the first book Marquin isn't as worried as she should be.

Marquin and Edine share basically everything with each other, except when one of them are having a hard time. Neither of them like talking about their emotions. But boys, kisses, pranks, rule breaking, etc. are all shared.
History
They meet when Solace, Charlotte, and Danny rescue Marquin from the Fire Demon Queen's dungeons. When they escape, Marquin stays in Solace's village for awhile to heal. Solace thinks Marquin is strong and brave for staying alive and sane for so long, and she thinks Marquin is compassionate although she's also cold and tough. In all a decent person according to Solace. But Solace doesn't really think about her opinion of Marquin with all the other stuff going on. Marquin admires Solace's calmness, professionalism, determination, and strength. During the escape Solace comforts people and tries her best best to heal people, and her kindness while being calm is new to Marquin. She finds it inspiring, although she doesn't know that. Additionally Marquin has never heard of a Life Shifter that can heal Energy, nonetheless a Life Shifter that can heal so much. In all, they have a mutual respect going on.
