Cottlud

The Dreamer

According to the Codex of Céan Síare, there was a time before the Great Dream. In those times, the universe as we know it was vast, dark, cold, and empty, without form and order. Cottlȗd the Dreamer found the emptiness and filled it with its dreams.

Of the void Cottlȗd shaped the Dream and lit up the stars to shine upon the world. His was creation of hope and loneliness, strength and weakness, love and despair, and of dreams. For Cottlȗd was the Dreamer and his was the power of creation.

He dreamed worlds of boundless beauty, worlds which would soothe his mind and give him peace. He walked between them and gave them substance and shape. He walked the plains and mountains, crossed rivers and seas, sat in the shade of a large tree but still he knew emptiness inside.

Thus Cottlȗd made fish and spoke with them. He taught them secrets of the deep, and gifted them with patience, wisdom, and long life. He walked the seas with them and they followed. But as Cottlȗd stepped onto the land, the fish stayed behind.

"You gave us life and taught us much, Sire, but we were created to swim and we cannot follow you to land," they said. This made Cottlȗd sad, thus he rested under a tree and felt darkness taking root in his heart.

Thus Cottlȗd made animals that walk and run. He spoke with them and gifted them with endurance and speed and resolve, he made them brothers and sisters of all. He walked the earth with them and they followed. But as Cottlȗd ascended to the sky, the animals stayed behind.

"You gave us life and taught us much, Sire, but we were created to walk and we cannot follow you to the skies," they said. This made Cottlȗd sad, thus he rested atop the tallest mountain and felt darkness growing in his heart.

Thus Cottlȗd made birds and creatures that fly, and spoke to them. He gifted them with quick minds and nimble body, he taught them to see far and wide. He flew with them and they followed. But as Cottlȗd took to the stars, the birds stayed behind.

"You gave us life and taught us much, Sire, but we were created to coast the skies and cannot follow you to the stars," they said. This made Cottlȗd sad, and he felt the darkness swell and he cried.

"Thrice have I tried to make that which would please my eye and soothe my mind, thrice have I failed," he whispered, and his mere whisper shook the world, tore mountains asunder and boiled the seas. Seeing the harm his grief caused turned Cottlȗd's tears black and he cried the darkness out from his heart. Thus Cottlȗd freed the Nightmare upon the Dream.
