The Anchor in Seram | World Anvil

The Anchor (An-kor)

In the middle of the Tathi Sea sits the Anchor Kiln. Discovered by Hesyn Drash, an Aguornian Fisherman, in 32PsK - it quickly became the kiln of aguornians. The sea-faring nation have the most control over the sea, their ships can manage it's waters even when Waek brings a storm. The kiln appeared in the eye of a storm, it half-tilted on it's side on a raised bed of coral. Unlike other kilns, The Anchor is not surrounded by water, but by kilnmetal itself in an azure hue. The kilnmetal will naturally cause anyone who enters it to float naturally, whether becoming Ferrus or not. By far, one of the hardest kilns for people to pilgramage to, both in financial cost and seafaring skill to reach, there are not a lot of people gifted by this kiln. The majority of those with this kilnmetal have been born and raised in Aguorn and know how to respect and navigate the waters.   The Tathi Sea is turbulent in the middle with storms and choppy waves making travel difficult, most routes tend to avoid a direct path through. The anchor is in a spot where the sea is generally calm, almost a permanent eye of the storm. The Aguornians have constructed a floating base near the kiln here for the Death Barges and Pilgrims that make their way here. This base is a way for smaller rafts to paddle towards the kiln. This is the only way for pilgrims to visit, as it is in the ocean, it is a potentially risky visit for a chance to become Ferrus. Unfortunately, some have perished near this kiln in the attempts to reach it through capsizing rafts or faulty floatation devices. Those who get into the kilnmetal will never have to worry about drowning, the kilnmetal will always support a person and provide safety. One of the lessons they always teach pilgrims on their way is that
"if you fall to the water, turn on your back and kick till you feel the kilnmetals warm embrace".
Some of the notable Ferrus who have been gifted here are Shanti Marl, the renown Aguornian pirate, and Tharis Morr, the Wistymian carpenter.   The kiln resembles a mishapen anchor, with the arm attached to the coral bed missing what would normally be a fluke. The kiln resembles an anchor that has reached the seafloor and has one arm dug into the sand. The top of the Anchor is not a ring, but a flat perch as if to give weary seabirds a place to land. There are usually either gulls or jiffins seen circling overhead or resting on this kiln. It measures about the size of two royal galleons stacked on top of each other, an easy point of reference on the horizon for ships that are travelling to or past this section of the Tathi Sea. At night it may seem that this large structure in the sea without light source would crash many ships, but the currents that arrive at this kiln diverge near the kilnmetal providing safe passage for large boats as if Waek himself leads them by.   The coral in this part of the sea has thrived in the last few hundred years due to the death barges with their dead. This has also increased the fish population in surrounding areas of the Tathi Sea much to the delight of the fishers that come to collect the variety of fish. In the colder months, the anchor is usually visited by the migrating Vawl, cresting in the calmer sea waters surrounding the kiln. The fishing of Vawl ceased after Shanti Marl parolled the sea ransacking and destroying entire crews of fishers seeking to poach these gentile beasts. Even years after her death, laws enacted by both Aguorn and Frahm have prevented this, ensuring the species survives in the open waters. The Anchor provides haven to those who manage to come by, fish or person.   In 478PsK, a rogue ship of Fractyr Followers had tried to sabotage this kiln, the first act of violence aimed at a kiln on Seram. They shot the kiln with armed metal capsules to try damage the structure. Although all kilns appear to be smooth rock, they left no dent on the monolith. The Anchor did not budge, or even suffer a blemish. They tried to climb the Anchor, but no pick or rope would adhere to it. They were seen by a death barge captain attacking the kiln in the evening with cannonblast echoing out. The captains retelling said it was only as night drew near that they had left, sailing towards the west. No ship of that description was seen in any waters of the Western Tathi Sea that following morning, most have said that the foolish crew was taken under by Waek for their arrogant attempt to destroy his kiln.   Getting to the kiln, one must go to the Aguornian port town of Vasa. Here there are various fishing boats that provide the passage for a hefty price. Some offer reduced pricing of the fare if the traveller will contribute to the sailing / maintenance of the ship during the journey. Locals can get to the kiln with smaller boats if they know which waters to use, but the majority of the people who make their way here want the opportunity to visit the large kiln that withstood an attack. For those who cannot afford the trip, some will go to the nearby smaller kiln, The Shell. In recent years, there are some shipping companies from north frahm that have started making their own trips with pilgrims to the Anchor, much to the distaste of the Aguornians. There is to be no conflict in the waters surrounding the kiln, as story tells it that anyone that attacks another in Waek's waters will suffer the same fate as the Fractyr Followers.   The refrain of the Aguornian sea-song "Waek's Anchor" is taught to young children to help them navigate the waters:
"Be not afraid of water blue and dark, Head north by north west, near home of sharq, Cut down south, towards the isles of fire, There you'll see it, Waek's Anchor entire
