Tharis Morr Character in Seram | World Anvil

Tharis Morr (Thar-riss Moor)

Tharis Morr was an Aguornian Carpenter, raised in Vasa. The Morr family have been shipbuilders for generations in the port town. The family was well known for their hand-crafted wooden ships. Their ships could manage hard storms with ease and look regal while doing so. Although Tharis was a carpenter like his father, his mother and sister were extremely gifted with chisel and lathe. They would detail the inside chambers of the ship and the ornate patterns that would be found around the hull. Tharis would help with the creation of the Mastheads as he enjoyed the larger sculptures. The Morr Shipyard was one of the larger buildings on the dock, which featured usually two ships being worked on at any one time.   In 278PsK, Tharis was working on a commission for a noble Wistymian Family that was one of the largest commissions to date. He lead the project over the two-year period it took to create. The maiden voyage would be heading to the canals separating the Tathi Sea and Lake Gorma by Wistym via The Anchor. Since the ship was very large, the long trip was the final sign-off in the contract for the family. Tharis had never visited The Anchor, usually work would take most of the time and his father would bring the ships out for a test voyage. Something stirred in him at the sight of the kiln up close, he felt compelled to try out his luck. He threw over a rope ladder into the water and descended into the calm sea. He swam over to the kilnmetal and it took over, keeping him afloat in its gentle embrace. The feeling of the metal adhering to him sent a wave of fulfillment through him.   Tharis Morr was the first ferrus in the family’s history. He received an extremely large amount of kilnmetal, the metal adhered to his spine from neck to hip and spread wide across. After a short while, he returned to the ship and set sail again. He continued to Wistym’s Wesp Canal to drop off the ship to the noble family and caught a returning boat back to Vasa a week later. In Wistym, he had met with an old Ferrus at the local Tavern, and listened to his stories and tales of what he had done with his abilities. He had also learned of what the fate of those who tried to accomplish feats well past their ability. The Norrn Ferrus, Grantt Fern, was impressed at how much kilnmetal Tharis had, eventually giving in to the requests to see his back from the old man. “Not many get that sea-kiln’s metal, and not in this amount from the stories I’ve heard.”   Upon returning to Vasa, and showing his family his new gift, he informed them he wanted to continue the business but push what they could do through his kilnmetal. Thatis practiced using his kilnmetal on creating ornate trims and mastheads for ships. The metal flowed over wood and carved it with ease, he could create something in an hour which would take days for his mother or sister. He rarely broke a sweat finishing the backlogs of commissions, mastheads done in half an hour, lifting and nailing planks for the boats were childsplay for him. Business boomed for the family for marine and domestic carpentry. Since he could help the family reduce ship-building time by 75%, the family could take more work simultaneously. The mother and sister helped with the designs and administration of all the clients while Tharis worked. His father was getting older and could not lift as well as he used to so he supervised his son at work.   As his name and abilities were being circulated, his clientele became more varied, and also better paying. Tharis would not deny the normal folk of Vasa and Aguorn however, they were their original customers and he would prioritize their needs first. The blue metal that sprung from his back or fingertips was like the ocean itself, and some locals would watch the ferrus at work just to see the marvel. Tharis was commissioned a few times by various monarchs, to create royal ships that were mostly for show but should work on the sea also. The Frahmian royalty and Norrn monarchy had received ornate ships that looked as if a crew of 100 had helped construct them. Tharis created the largest royal ship in modern history - The Vawl, for the Southern Frahmian Queen which took 8 months in total. He would always take the ships via The Anchor as a thank you, to show the kiln what it’s gift had allowed him to do.   Interestingly, Tharis has also created the ceiling of the royal palace in the Wistymian capital of Prastyl. The hall was longer than most ships he had created, and it was mostly intricately carved wood motifs and structures. The construction of it did take a month for the wood alone, and the painters the monarch had hired took almost a year to paint all the carved wood. The ceiling still looks brand new, over 200 years later. The paint has to be touched up every decade but the wood underneath still bears Tharis’ original skill. As he was talented in carpentry and shipbuilding, he had helped with the creation of many ornate projects in Prastyl, from grand staircases to ornate furniture. A Morr chair still has a high value at auctions across the world.   In his 36th year, Tharis visited Forrm after an invite came from the Forgys council. His family weren’t followers of the Forgys faith, but their teachings resonated with him and he joined shortly after. He gave talks and demonstrations of how he used the kilnmetal to carve wood and create structures. The knowledge sharing of Forgys members is a strength of the faith and Tharis, like his family, did not believe in keeping trade secrets as they thought the craftmanship is why the customer chose them.   Tharis passed at his 78th year at his home in Vasa, passing over the business to his daughter and son. His deathbarge procession was celebrated and the town renamed one of the side streets in his honour - Tharis St.
