Aguorn (Agg-worn)

Aguorn, the naval nation. Most of aguorn’s citizens live on coastal towns where the sea provides food and trade. Inland Aguorn is mostly marshy swampland and has some settlements along rivers. Seafood and fish are the main items eaten in this nation, and waekweed is a local delicacy.   Aguornians are often the spreader of news throughout the world as they pick up stories in ports and spread them on.

THE PEOPLE OF AGUORN

PERSONALITY

Aguornians are known to be the most sociable and light-hearted nation, this could be down to the fact that the tavern is the main socializing spot and the locals do enjoy getting merry with each other. Aguornians are a clinically optimistic people who believes that there is always calm waters past the waves. The further inland you go, the more the people are similar to their bordering regions. A very competitive people, most families constantly try to pull in larger catches than the others. All the competition makes the banter much better after a day’s work.

TRADITIONS

INKINGS

Once an Aguornian comes of age, it is customary to get an inking on your lower arm. This is usually up to the person what to get, usually a plant or animal that they think they have similar qualities to. Originally it was only Aguornian Fauna and Flora, but as time has gone on, and stories and trade has seen many new knowledge of the world, inkings has become varied to anything the individual has heard or seen from others. The device was traditionally a metal rod with dye that would be struck into the skin gently over hours. There are many talented gifted Ferrus that can bestow an inking in minutes. This has also increased the size of inkings considerably. Inkings have also travelled elsewhere, with some getting facial inkings or hand inkings to adorn their skin. In Aguorn this is seen as art, but many regions like Wistym and Norr look down on this and perceive it as tarnishing the body.

DEATH BARGE

An old tradition predating the kilns, a monthly ship is used to hold the dead and bring them out to sea. When a person dies near Aguorn Coast, the family members will dress them up in their clothes and wrap them several times in waekweed. This drying plant allows the body to stay preserved and not rot until the barge sails. Once wrapped, the individual has Waek’s marker sealed with wax. This allows Waek to recognise one of his children and welcome them to the depths. The loved ones name is attached with a small piece of wood and hung around the waist.   The barge then goes on its monthly trip, out to the center of the ocean, and offloads the bodies into the waters, down to the ocean bed to rest eternally. Most will be buried near The Anchor Kiln, the deep blue water marrying the deep blue metal. The barge has a government section member and someone to sing a song to celebrate the lives of the people who are being buried at sea. Once the trip is finished and the barge returns to port, the families will have a celebration of the life of the person who passed and tell stories of their life which is recorded by the government section scribe in the official records of Aguorn so that no citizen is truly forgotten.

ARCHITECTURE

HOUSES

Buildings in Aguorn tend to be no more than two levels since the season of strong winds and storms makes that a liability. Houses tend to face the ocean so that they can divert the wind, houses at the seafront have a curved point that will split the wind to the sides and down streets. The front row of houses in a town are likened to the jaws of the shim, multiple rows of curved teeth. The Aguornians have a tradition of building bedrooms on the street level and kitchens and living areas upstairs due to the belief that if flood comes at night, you should join the water in your sleep, and food should be saved if flood arrives during the day. Most other regions say that it’s probably best to keep bedrooms upstairs and build flood protection along the water edge.

SHIPS

Most ships aren’t built in Aguorn Coast, but closer to the dryer region near Silika, this allows better treatment for water protection as the arid weather guarantees the wood to be bone dry. Ships generally are made for fishing although the traders and diplomats favour more comfortable and larger vessels. The built ships are quite long and narrow, allowing them to pierce the waves of the sea, whereas the fishing vessels for closer sailing tend to be wider and shorter, built to hold rather than to sail.

GOVERMENT

The government is comprised of each one the main families of the region. There are 36 representatives in total, which is divided into sections, coast and inland. The two sections seldom meet unless it is in time of crisis or external affairs. Coastal will handle inland’s trades across the ocean and Inland will handle Coastal’s trade to the neighbouring regions. This way of dealing with affairs has worked for generations. Each major issue is brought up by a citizen or the section and voted upon when all members are in attendance. Most of the representatives no longer work on the sea, so theyre available until they pass the position on to their next of kin.
