Buildings of Yclarta
The glittering multicolored buildings of Yclarta best illustrate the beauty of the town. The are an example of the fine craftmanship that the potters practice and are a hint of the goods to be purchased within.
Purpose / Function
The houses serve the purpose of shelter from the severe thunderstorms and winds that can sweep across the plains and through the town. They also serve as protection from the heat during the summer.
Architecture
Buildings in Yclarta are built from clay since that is the most abundant resource nearby. The more extravagant the building (or the more money an owner has) the more color that can be added to the clay before firing. Simple houses are usually the base color of red. The houses are built typically rectangular and are built parallel to the typical wind flow of the town. This is more useful in the Summer when temperatures can be extremely high. The position of the building allows for a little breeze to flow through the house. The houses are excellent for keeping in heat during the Winter although the Winters are usually mild. Ever 20 years or so Winters can get so cold that snow will fall and actually stick to the ground. Every house has a chimney built into. Usually attached to the kitchen area, but the wealthy can afford to have two chimneys built. Once for cooking and the other for a fireplace. For the houses that have only one chimney it is typical to gather in the kitchen or have the kitchen in what other places would consider the central living area.
Wealthy occupants will have clay fences built around their property while lower classes might weave fences together out of vittles from the Flaxen fields. While the "grain" fences are not strong they do allow for a modicum of privacy from nosy neighbors.
