Kirottu Valta [The Cursed Dominion]

When the Lady cast the cursed wood elves into the oblivion they did not cease to exist. Deep under the surface of the world the cursed elves found themselves transported. Their very souls twisted by hatred and rage, the Kirottu’keiju (Cursed Elves) welcomed their surroundings. The location they found themselves in was as fortunate as they could hope for. A vast underground freshwater sea, known to the cursed elves as the Kylma’meri (Frigid Sea), was teeming with life. This provided the elves with immediate access to water and food, but also put them in danger from the monsters lurking both in the water and in the deep itself. Druids of the group set immediately to work, shaping the stone of the massive cavern walls into fortifications. This starting settlement would grow into the bastion of their people, from which to grow and plot the demise of the Lady and her progeny.     With only a few hundred elves cursed, great respect was given to the women who were present. Not only was the parallel to their creator (and curse giver) seen in them, but also the need of them to build the new society. From this, Kirottu’keiju society formed into matriarchal in structure. As the population at last grew beyond fragile levels, the Matriarkkas (Matriarchs) of large families vied for power over the town itself. The Mustapakkas (Blackfrost) family orchestrated the assassination of most of the other family matriarchs and allied with like-minded others who supported them as suited to reign over the town. Haldis Mustapakkas became sole ruler of the capital, with only minor bloodshed from family warriors. Ten years into her rulership, she would take the mantle of Keisarinna (Empress), as she sent forth warriors to claim rulership of the surrounding settlements created by various families that had left to create their own bastions. The grand title met with disdain by many families, but ultimately was prophetic as Haldis claimed rulership over all Kirottu’keiju settlements. Kirottu Valta, the Cursed Dominion, was formed.

Structure

Every settlement of the Dominion is ruled by a Matriarkka. Grasp of her rulership lasts only so long as she can maintain it by force of arms and cunning. The largest and most powerful of families are officially recognized by the Keisarinna as Great Houses, affording them additional rights to how many troops and the amount of resources that may be kept. Excess must be given to House Mustapakkas. With the ultimate goal of the cursed elves being eradication of the surface elves and their Lady, combat and guile are prized. Each Matriarkka must answer to the Keisarinna, and any supplanting matriarch must show why she deserves her new appointment as ruler to the empress. Should she fail to impress the Keisarinna, she is put to death and her family assets distributed between the citizens minus a tax. For this reason, competition for rulership of each settlement has somewhat stabilized.   The populace is divided into a tertiary caste system. One third is devoted to workers, one third to warriors, and one third to mystics. Prestige of caste is also ranked in that order from low to high. Movement between castes is rare, based on the disappointment or pleasure of the Matriarkka or Keisarinna.
