Syva Linnoitus

The capital was the first settlement created by the Kirottu’keiju. It rests against the Kylma’meri and the eastern wall of the great cavern. Much of the cavern is comprised of basalt, lending to the vast majority of structure being gray in color. Coal is found in abundance, much to the fortune of the populace. Coal provides much of the heat in the Cursed Dominion. Also fortuitous for the people, is the existence of the phosphorescent moss known to the dwarves above. Though not so prominent as above, its presence high above in the ceiling of the great cavern helps filter the toxic smoke and provide fresh oxygen. Coal furnaces exist throughout the city and are constantly lit and tended. This affords residents the ability to stop for warmth or refuel their home furnaces, if they can afford to pay the fees. Currency of the realm is diamond shards, also used as components in some craftwork. Tallow or oil candles with moss-weave wicks provide initial lighting sources for coal, when no other heated coals are available for starters. Candles are rather expensive for general purchase, however, due to limited moss and tallow resources. The earliest settlers kept warm by wearing furs and sharing body heat, which is the same situation the poor of modern Syva Linnoitus (and other settlements) find themselves in.   Among the most impressive buildings in the capital is the Dark Citadel from which the city was named. Over the granite walls was shaped obsidian, with many spikes along its walls to deter physical assaults. Red light is reflected periodically along its surface from the coal furnaces along its perimeter, which mark rest stations of the Varjon’valio (Champions of the Shadow).   Caste division is most noticeable in the capital. While the worker caste affords some respect as the builders and workmen of the realm, they tend to fall more easily afoul of the ire of the other castes. In lacking combat or magic as a means of might, they can do little when they have angered prominent caste members of the warrior or mystic. Populations in the other settlements tend to still be fragile, and so rarely execute members of the castes. Among the capital caste members, all that displease prominent members might find themselves facing execution. Two prominent worker caste members are required to execute a member of the warrior caste, and three for a member of the mystic caste. Similarly, two prominent members of the warrior cast are required to execute a member of the mystic caste.   Food is primarily comprised of fish. This is minorly supplemented with roots, fungi, marrow, and meat from deep monsters. Fisheries are manned by the worker caste and to a minor extent the mystic caste. Unsure of how finite a resource the sea life is, they seek to replenish the supply. In a similar vein the two castes also manage growth caverns to farm fungi, roots, and moss. Monster farms are also maintained, though by the worker and warrior castes due to the unpredictable tempers of deep creatures.
