The Tongue of Ciholve Myth in Seiðrheim | World Anvil

The Tongue of Ciholve

The Tongue of Ciholve is one of the most sought after magical items in Seidrheim. Whether or not it truly exists, we'll leave up to you to decide.   Although there is very little information about the Drow living on Seidrheim, anyone with an interest in shapeshifting knows about Ciholve. Unlike many Drow, the history of Ciholve is well known due to the fact that she spent most her life traveling, learning about new species above and below ground. Shapeshifting on its own is hardly something to be fascinated with, but Chiholve had a way with her power. She never spoke of where she learned her abilities, but legend has it that Ciholve could shapeshift into more than 10,000 animate & inanimate things. Even the most magically adept individuals in our time can only manage upwards of 100 animate things. Ciholve was unique in that she learned to turn into anything from a snake, to a dragon, to a frying pan.   Norgan, an ancient king whose writings indicate he knew Ciholve briefly, wrote that she once became a fly in front of him. He pleaded with her, wanting her to become his arcane advisor and political spymaster, to which she responded by transforming into a bedpan. Norgan knew he couldn't contain her, so left the bedpan at the top of a lookout tower. Three days later, he climbed the tower to find a note stuck at the top of the stairs. Ciholve explained that she would never be bound to anyone, but should some brave soul cut out her tongue, they would have her power. She wrote that she had bound the secrets of her shapeshifting prowess into her tongue, and that anyone proficient in magic could insert it into a skull, re-animate, and that it would share her wisdom.   Ciholve was never seen thereafter (that we know of). This story is told to young children, which sometimes becomes problematic, as they begin talking to their bedpans.
