The Mountain Dwarves Ethnicity in Seiðrheim | World Anvil

The Mountain Dwarves

The Dwarves of Seiðrheim break into three groups, your standard Dwarves, Hill Dwarves, and Mountain Dwarves. All three ethnicities of Dwarves build cities, it is just where they build them that differs. Seiðrheim Dwarves live in a few cities, some underground, some in the hills, and a sparse few in the mountains. This means most mountain dwarves are displaced into the larger dwarven cities, and they hate to be underground. So, they paint bright blue ceilings in their houses, and leave the cities whenever they have the slightest reason for it. This has formed a little counter culture among the Dwarves, leading to the Mountain Dwarves being treated differently, they are often called the slur “topdwellers” by the other dwarves of the cities, and they are forced to live in the lesser developed portions of the cities.

This has led to the Mountain Dwarves forming their own markets and shoppes in the Mountain Dwarf neighborhoods, excluding them more from the standard and hill dwarves of the cities. The Hill Dwarves get along okay with the Mountain Dwarves, but the divide between them appears to be growing as the mountain dwarves distance themselves from the other dwarves. Many Mountain Dwarves leave the cities and go on adventures, all the while being weary of other Dwarves, but they make a living clearing out goblin bands and hunting the ever-present giant rats in the many taverns strewn about the land.

The few Mountain Dwarf Cities, serve as near holy sites for the city dwelling Mountain Dwarves, they make pilgrimages to the mountain cities once a year, filling these small cities to the brim and eating most the food they have stored for the winter. This has led to the small mountain cities economies depending on these pilgrimages, but also a logistical issue with keeping food around for the harsh winters. Many warehouses have been built, giving the cities an industrial feel, and much food and drink is imported from the lower Dwarven Cities. It is said that the festivals held in the mountain cities are something you have to experience at least once in your life, but don’t go if hordes of dwarves cause you to be nervous.
