Arthur Barrett I
Arthur Barrett is the patriarch of the Barrett household. He has a gambling problem, drinks to excess, and is generally careless. He loves his wife, but not enough to mend his ways. He is more or less indifferent to his children. He never wanted any, but his wife did so they had children.
Arthur Barrett comes from a British family that is quite well to do, he took his inheritance and fled England after a, particularly bad scandal. He’s settled in Boston where he met a creole woman, Elizabeth Barrett, and married her. His family did not come to the wedding, as they viewed the whole thing as another one of his wild benders. None of the European Barretts have anything to do with their American family.
One of the many detrimental habits that Arthur brought with him from England, is an insatiable love for gambling and drinking. One of his first purchases was a large house, now the Barrett estate, over the succeeding years, he managed to gamble away the remainder of his money, and has been forced to stoop particularly low with regards to his daughters in order to procure enough money to hold off both the taxman and maintain his standard of living. His apparent love for his wife Beth is real enough, but nothing is strong enough to induce him to leave behind his vices. He’s aware of some of his shortcomings, but not the depths to which it has fallen.
Arthur sees an even greater opportunity, went after one of the shows at Lady Abney, Lady Abney herself reaches out to him to inform him that she has a significant offer for the time of his eldest daughter. It is at that time that Arthur and Crawford have their fateful meeting. And this is the first meeting that little John Arthur’s grandson and Arthur the second son witnesses.
