Sea of Fallen Stars
The Sea of Fallen Stars is the main geographic centerstage where this part of the World revolves, with the common nickname "The Sea of Empires." This is namely because for several thousand years, since the dawn of civilization, famous empires have risen and fallen with the shores of the Sea of Fallen Stars as its beating heart. The most recent Impilturian Empire held rulership over every shore of the Sea, and its cultural impact can be found still prevelent to this day, especially in its destruction of its southern rival the Sildeyuir Empire.
Despite its northern geography, it regulates the temperature of everywhere south of the Sea of Black Ice, making the climate warm and suitable for civilizations to develop.
Geography
The Sea of Fallen Stars is a massive body of water that covers roughly 0.7% of the World's surface area, and is mostly surrounded by land. It is 3,200 miles at its widest extent from the Bay of Roses to the Bay of Ashes, with 2,500 miles between the South Passage and the Sea of Black Ice. It is only 800 miles at its narrowest major extent, from the northern tip of Elyn'aran and the south shore of Impiltur. The Sea is broken up into several smaller bays, gulfs and seas.
On the northern border, the Sea of Fallen Stars moves through the Dragon Reach which has a current of cold water flowing southward from the Sea of Black Ice (a subsection of the Sea of Fallen Stars) and the Cold Stone Isles, and is the widest connection to the World Ocean, reaching towards the Ziemeli Ocean that surrounds The Abandoned Continent. The western shore follows the coastline of Berenike and Thorolund, with the Gulf of Roses pushing deep westward. To the southwest is the South Passage, with the Bay of Shepherds on its northwestern end, a thin strait that leads to the Deaas Ocean south of Elyn'aran. The southern shore then encompasses the realms of Elyn'aran and Veliuona, with the south shore of the Sea belonging to the elves since they first appeared several thousand years ago. The southeast corner of the Sea is known as the Bay of Ashes, a region of the sea that took on a grey-black color during the Black Ash Days, with Veliuona and Rusulka surrounding the bay. The eastern shore is an arid landscape that is scarcely populated north of the Volhynia Mountains, with the Black Ash Plains making up most of the shore before it becomes the cold grasslands of Kvasir at the Gulf of Myamir. A thin strait connects the Sea of Fallen Stars to the Pale Sea. The northern shores of the Sea of Fallen Stars have Varaskien, Astora and Impiltur bordering, with the Easting Reach pushing into the border of Astora and Impiltur where the expansive Rawlinswood can be found. Other points of interest include the Pirate Isles in the west-central region of the Sea. The namesake of the Sea of Fallen Stars can be found nearly in the center of the sea, a location known as the Fallen Star. It is surrounded by a ring of spire crags that poke out from the sea sharp and threatening, making passage through them in any sizable ship impossible. Past the crags is the gargantuan whirlpool that stretches over two miles across, decending over half a mile into a glowing orange-yellow core where a large stone sits on the seafloor, with the crags what remains of its crater. The Fallen Star at the heart is still molten hot despite thousands of years at the bottom of the sea, and having water swirl into it constantly defies explaination. The Sea of Fallen Stars is still the epicenter of meteoric impacts to this day, continuing its namesake. North of Impiltur is the island of Thume, a volcanic island that hosts a citystate of the same name where the largest school of wizardry is found, with the most powerful archanists having spent time or residency here. In Thorolund, the Black River forms a delta that is covered in the salt water Umber Swamp, a notorious realm of Black Dragons.
