ankhegs

These carnivorous tunneling insects are weight about six hundred pounds and average eight feet long. They like fresh meat and are not above attacking humanoids. They prefer easy targets but they are not particularly intelligent even by animal standards and cannot often tell the difference between a strong prey and a vulnerable prey, meat is meat.   They are believed to have existed since the First Age, perhaps created as an aid to dragon agriculture, dragons not being remotely threatened by ankhegs, would appreciation the soil fertilization and aeration that ankhegs provide. They still fertilize the soil and are beneficial to farming but now they are dangerous enough that they can occasionally eat farmers or livestock.
